Just had my car in a local BMW indy shop for the "lifetime" fluid change. Had power steering, rear diff., manual gear box and antifreeze fluids done.
I asked them about getting the WP replaced as preventative. (I am at 64,000 now) They told me it is $1,400 to replace with thermostat. He recommended that I should wait and get it done closer to 100K. It will show symptoms first. |

Thanks for posting, sorry to hear about that. I think yours is the first 1M that the waterpump has failed on. Did your dealer say why it failed? Or IF they have seen other 1M's with waterpump problems/failures?

2008 / June 2008 ______45K______cost me... $612 not covered under warranty or good will_______N54
Just started having the low coolant light come on. I topped it off once, drove it for a day. Light came back on. Topped it off again and drove it to work and back. I noticed there was a bit of coolant leaking onto the ground. It had been raining for the past 2 days and couldn't see anything.. Today I got the car in the air and dropped the sea of plastic underneath. My pump has not officially failed yet, but is leaking at the aluminum/gasket/plastic sandwich. I'll be doing it myself this weekend if I get parts in time. Ordered everything from Turner Motorsports. Last edited by 96ti; 05-29-2013 at 08:11 PM.. |

Dack, I guess I should rephrase. I was explaining the lead up to the replacement of the water pump. My low coolant lamp started lighting up for two days and consumed (expelled) over a gallon of coolant over the course of 2 days. Once I finally had the chance to get the car up in the air, I discovered the WP was leaking. I just called the dealer and had them look at the service history; still the original WP. |

Thanks for clearing that up. Good Luck on the R&R. It seems to me from this poll that the early cars are really at a higher failure rate. Maybe as time goes by that will also be true for later M.Y. builds. But so far the failure rates are quite high for 2008's and to a lesser extent 2009's.

adding more info to thread
Hey Dack,
Do you think it would be worth it to add the manufacture of the failed water pumps and the one they replaced it with? I know this may not be possible for everyone because some may be serviced under warranty, but it could be worth a shot. Possibly add just a tally to the first thread. Failed WP: Siemens New WP: Continental ^^Continental bought Siemens not too long ago. Curious as to if anything actually changed. Last edited by 96ti; 06-05-2013 at 05:32 AM.. |

'09 128 N52 38K miles original pump. You would think that after all the cooling system failures in BMWs throughout history they would have figured it out by now. It's not rocket science

CPO 50,000+ miles I've had it since last December and, to the best of my knowledge, the original water pump is still on the car.
