@scotth944 IDK the answer. But I suspect it might work. You might have to modify your new shift lever. Years ago I bought a Z3M shifter for my e36. I also had to bend the lever arm using a vise and two long sockets. This website helped me figgure out how to bend the lever. I think I would first install your lever to see how it works. ?

Too bad I couldn't get the correct shifter until today, I would have enjoyed watching the Le Mans race in the garage while working on the M . |

I went to install the BMW SSK lever today and was surprised by how much difference there was in the angle of the handle when compared to the stock 1M lever. Luckily Dackelone had posted a installation link that inspired me to make my own lever "recalibration tool" so that I could make the end of the lever line up to where the stock one would be. It just so happen that the jack handle I had was a perfect fit to the lever cylinder so I could use it to bend the lever end without too much trouble. I also had to use the drill bit you see to keep the shaft lined up correctly while bending the shaft since it kept wanting to twist around on me during the process.
I also did the N55 mid pipe swap while I was at it and it probable took me less than 2 hours to do all the part swaps in my garage and another 4 hours making the necessary tooling I needed to modify the lever. Thanks to 1 Addicts for hints I needed to make this an easy and fun project to work on today. I did find this car to be a pleasure to work on with how it was put together especially given that this is not my first time working on "German" made automobiles. After taking the car out for a drive, I found that I would have preferred a little less reduction in throw say 25-50% than what the BMW part offered. I'll have to see if I just need to get use to it to be satisfied with the setup, I will say that the mod I did to the lever worked out great and my hand and arm position feels very natural with the new setup. The N55 mid also made a noticeable difference for me in pickup and go. |

I purchased parts 4-6, part 5 is the only required part and the other two are optional for a 1M installation.
Getting the two plastic bushing tabs to twist to the fully released point without damaging it was the only tricky part I ran into. I used two small flat blade screw drivers to spin it around in the mount. Last edited by scotth944; 07-06-2014 at 08:34 AM.. |

Have a few extra c-clips on hand bc they will fly off never to be seen again. They are cheap insurance to a hassle free DIY job! Here are a few pics from an e36 shifter. Its really the same thing. I agree with Scott, getting that shifter bushing to rotate and off, is a bitch. Also... don't punch yourself in the eye when you pull UP on the shifter knob/boot. You laugh but people do knock themselves out when trying to remove that leather shift lever! e36 shifter... Here you can clearly see the notch where the shift lever bushing locks into that saddle carrier. You only need to rotate the bushing 90' counter clockwise to unlock it from the carrier.

If you decide to go the extra step and remove the mid pipe to make getting the C-clips off easier, you will more than likely need 2 new gaskets for the down pipe/mid pipe connection. The rear seal should be reusable.

GetBMWParts.com had them on the shelf when I dropped by last month, another dealership I inquired with was also willing to take the order, I don't know if they may still be available in the BMWUSA system but they seem to be in stock at some locations. I also saw that the BMW Performance web page no longer shows the SSK for the E82 135.

Part # 25110434219 seems to still be active, it should work in a pinch and given that the 135 version was not an exact matchup in how the bends were made when I compared it to the stock one yet people we happy that installed it that way, I suspect it might be close enough. I think you will find the lever to point/sit a little closer to the dash from where the stock one now sits.

Yipee
So, after looking high and low on the web (parts discontinued) it just so happened that I recently received a "service request" from the dealer and low and behold the dealer had all the parts necessary for the SSK in stock ..... happy 3rd Birthday to my baby. Shift is dramatically shorter and does not take much getting used too .... Thanks all for the valuable info ... You all rock!

You know @1mGator ... to this day, everytime I drive on the German narrow back roads and see one of the "Strassen Spiegels" - I think of your Avatar and your 1M ED writeup!! Even after all this time.
