Yeah. Can we all now agree we are looking at the M1? Besides Scott confirming as much, there are too many M elements to argue otherwise.

Besides what Scott has said, I can't believe the amount of people who think BMW would go to all the trouble of widening the fenders/track just for an IS model. IS model as someone has already mentioned is just a 335i with performance pack!
Not major changes like this mule. And everyone asking where the cosmetic M things are... come on... it's a test mule! They are trying to hide anything resembling M things (ie- fenders, front bumper, rear bumper)... Why go to the trouble of hiding those things, only to show obvious M cosmetic bits on the top of the car... sigh... It's an M |

There is little doubt that overall these two cars (1M and M3) are catering for different needs with the M3 aimed more towards the better allrounder as always while the smaller, lighter 1M being the more focused driver's car that will be better suited to the track and dynamic driving. A perfect addition to the M family. |

It's an M for sure. Redesigning the fenders and wider tyres is something typical of an M car, not an IS model. Of course they are trying to hide as much as possible, I'm sure we will see the quad exhausts and M style hood in the final version. Although I don't know much about the potential of the N55 I'm a bit disappointed that it's being used in the M1, even if it is a basically a beefed up version. I always thought M engines were designed from the ground up specifically for the M line. The N55 is the replacement for the N54. Anyways, whatever happens I know the M1 will be a beast when it comes out. It will probably be more economically sensible for me to spend another 5-10k on my car and call it a day... Still won't be an M1 though Lucky the 135i has so much potential already. |

I just hope we see this in the dealership showrooms by 1st quarter of 2011. I need a new DD.

I enhanced the original pic taken from the rear of the car in order to lighten up the shadows under the car. You can clearly see the additional finning for heat dissipation on the M diff. Additionally, look closely at the rear camber arms. You will note that they appear to be cast aluminum arms like the M3 ones, not stamped steel like the 135i/335i ones.
Here's a comparison of the standard camber link (LEFT side) and the M3 camber link (RIGHT SIDE) (pic courtesy of Harold from HPA): I would not be surprised if BMW dug into the E92 M3 parts bin a lot for the M1. It would be an economical choice, and cost will be a MAJOR consideration for this car, as it has the potential to approach $50k. |

Does anybody else think the rear fender flares are less prominent than expected? Scott indicated that rear vents are to be incorporated to balance out the proportions of the rear end, but I'm not sure that will be needed based on these pictures.
Maybe the psychodelic camo de-emphasizes the fender contours. |

I am happy to see the M1 shaping up nicely. I am hoping that they can drop another 100lbs off the car, that would be fantastic. and also, I believe the N55 twin turbo will be a baseline for the next generation M3s engine too. They will further develop it and serve it in M3.. since all big NAs are going away.

I could see up to 150lbs in weight savings if they also use lighter wheels, suspension bits, etc.

I wish CF roof will be standard, but I think it will be an option since it will not be "affordable" with it.

it does seem to be an undercover M b/c of the differential+fenders, but BMW is keeping this very hush, even edmunds.com thinks its probably going to be a 135is

I found it funny how people focused on the missing M parts. BMW wouldnt' have bothered with the fenders if they are doing an 'is' model. The S engine will have TT, and still rumoured to be Twin Scroll as well - which would make this very interesting on an I6. Of course the other way of having it may be a TwinTurbo, Triple Scroll?
