There is (*are) too many people that don't even know what drone is in an exhaust system apparently. Drone is not the 'metallic reverberation' you are referring to on the E46. What you are referring to is the 'rasp' that some didn't like on that M3. I personally like the frenetic scream of the E46M3, which the rasp is an integral part of. The origin of this sound is NOT in the exhaust but rather the midpipe. Rogue had a rasp pipe that eliminated this sound. Don't spend anymore money on exhausts trying to eliminate that sound. Get this:
But DRONE is: A continuous, low frequency, monotonous sound. I appreciate your comments - but I KNOW what "Rasp" is.. The metallic reverberation that I am referring to is low frequency sound waves reflecting off the metal frame inside the cabin. It was created by the size and shape of the Eisenmann muffler and was intolerable. Not loud, just sounded bad and gave me a headache.. I am in Stuttgart.. I know Eisenmann exhausts and I was very disappointed with the drone INSIDE the car. The sound OUTSIDE was awesome. "Noooo. Eisenmann exhausts have a consistent sound for any given model and "individual car harmonics"? What are you talking about? Unless BMW(or whoever is making the exhaust for BMW) is changing the design mid production, the sound from car to car will be the same.[/QUOTE]" I disagree.. The drone in my e46 was not common and not expected by me or by my mechanic who has been tunbing BMW's for over ten years. Every situation is minutely different and that results in different sounds. But back on topic.. I have just put 200 Autobahn and B road miles on my new 1M and I have no drone.. In fact when they drove it out at the Welt - it was the loudest car there. Even louder than a X6 M and every other BMW delivered that morning.. the exhaust had no drone and inside the car - was almost too quiet. For those who have drone - I know your pain.. I am just lucky - this time. |

Mine is abating and the rev range in which it occurs is narrowing. If it ends up being persistent in just say a 300 rpm range then it won't be an issue in terms of overall enjoyment of the car.

The car is actually as loud up in the higher rev range - but it's just the normal loud exciting sounds - ie no problem with that. Will measure it again in a week's time and see what we get.

Drove the 1M recently, and there is without a doubt a "boomy" exhaust sound that takes over the car when cruising on the highway around 60 mph. Car had 200 miles on the odometer. Too bad.

I now have 3000Km on my car, so I figured it was time to vote. Nothing but beautiful music for me, with an aggressive rasp around 5K under acceleration, but no drone.

Definitely a drone on mine. And I'm saying that having had aftermarket exhausts on all cars I've owned (some quite loud). But big difference between more sound from an exhaust and drone - this is pretty bad and borderline intolerable. Hoping it disappears when I slap the MadDad midpipe.
Anybody here running an aftermarket midpipe on an otherwise stock setup that can comment how that affected the drone? TIA

I do have a drone as well and since I use my 1M to commute to work it can be somewhat annoying. Hopefully it will be history when I replace the exhaust system with something louder...

I think I'm now in the same boat now
Had the car two months and done around 700 miles so far. Majority of driving is motorway and due to running-in, I do around 65-70mph on most journeys with Cruise control on where possible. The drone is evident at around 2200-2500 rpm, between 60-65mph. It doesn't bother me that much, but i think about it more due to the comments made on the forum. |

Well either that, or i'm clearly not hearing what others have heard.
I've heard the words "Boom" and "Bang" used in some posts. Mine is neither a boom or a bang. |

I have Berk midpipes and the drone is still their, but the tone is different. It is not nearly as annoying as stock and after a couple of miles I don't notice it any more.

I don't have my 1M yet, but I currently have a performance exhaust on my 550i that drones from 1,500 to 1,900 rpm. It can be annoying depending on my mood. |

I have it too..somewhere between 2K and 2.5K RPM, I don`t like it, my M3 had it too..........only solution; pick a different gear to avoid the +/-2.3K RPM.

BTW Red, can you comment how the sound is now with your stock axle back but with the Berk mids? Any chance you have a before and after sound clip?

Other than saying it is just the right amount of louder (outside the car) and throttle response did improve, I can't offer anything quantitative.

It's louder and has more drone than I thought it could possibly have, and it's great. Makes me feel like I am driving a performance oriented car and not a Lexus ES350. Good market for resale if you truly can't take it.
