Will do.... it's so strange though, changed those two bad plugs and now theres much better response, the trick is that meanwhile i don't pass pushing a quarter throttle the car picks up rather well, the minute i pass that throttle point to give it any more the power just isn't there and throws the malfunction as it slowly tries to pick up

Update...again
Ran diagnostics and turns out my fuel pump picked an opportune time to crap out just after replacing the plugs... Diagnostic showed fuel pump failure and misfiring. Set the appt for this week so she gets a new one.

Just replaced my plugs with BMW ones....getting a cylinder 5 misfire. Don't have my PROcede anymore so I'm just using a regular OBDII. Swapped back to the older plug and the car runs smoother, but at WOT is misfires again on cyl 5. Car ran perfect before I swapped plugs. Any ideas? Keep in mind...car ran perfect before I swapped plugs.

I would try moving cylinder #5's coil pack to another cylinder. Also make sure the electrical tab on top of the coil pack is engaging the electrical harness fully and that is not getting "cocked" in there. (see the Cobb video) And of course you could always try buying one new spark plug from BMW and seeing if that changes anything.

How much are people spending on dealership spark plug replacements? I do not have the tools/patience to tackle this one. My dealer in Toronto, Canada is asking $299.00

To be fair I got mine from ESC Tuning this time instead if BavAuto. All in they were about $110 I think after shipping. Then again I did have the bad one.
I'm starting to think it might be more a case if bad location than bad plugs. Doing my initial search I notice that the vast majority of bad plugs are on cylinder 5. That's the cylinder that is a little more of a pita to get to because of the strut tower brace. I wonder if people (myself included) haven't been seating them correctly because of this. On my last attempt I just disconnected the brace at the strut tower and swung it out of the way so I could seat the plug correctly. Just a hunch. |

Go get a set of spark plugs purchased from a BMW dealer. I don't know why... but there is something different from the BMW Bosch plugs(OE) vs the aftermarket Bosch plugs(OEM).

^^+1. Yup.
Also make sure you got the right spark plugs in the first place. There are N54 and N55 specific park plugs(two types). Maybe you got the wrong plugs. ?

hmm...I'm still a ways off from doing my plugs but finding the correct socket is impossible unless I order the hazet socket on ebay for over 50 bucks!! geez...really??
It's painfully obvious BMW does not want people working on their own cars. Anybody else find a cheaper one with out having to grind the wall down on an abrasive wheel??

Go here, $20: Burger Motorsports
What would make the BMW dealer plugs any different? The price difference between getting them at an autoparts store vs BMW was significant. Crazy mark-up!

Thanks a bunch guys. I'm fairly new to BMW so my toolbox is still lacking. I wish I had your toolbox Dack. You have probably saved thousands of euros by fixing stuff yourself. That's gotta be a good feeling

Are there online stores to purchase the BMW version of the plugs? Curious if there might be a less expensive source than my local dealer. Just canceled my order from BMS...
Thanks for the pics Ian.

Thank you Dack. Did this a few weeks ago with only 35k on the ODO. Was easy to do thanks to your DYI.
My plugs were still in good shape, but it's nice to know that my engine is still working like a dream. Best, M PS: Took me and a mate only 1.5 hrs. |

It's really just a socket set and an accurate/appropriate torque wrench.

Back when i had the VW's they always had issues with the coil packs. Be super careful with them. Place them on a towel on the ground and carefully wipe them down and even use some compressed air to clean them out. I have no idea why the build quality of German coil packs is so bad but just be super careful. Also before i reinstalled them I also use to dab a little bit of dielectric grease on the tip of the spark plug to ensure it was making full and clean contact with the coil. I also pushed some onto the prongs that went into the coil from the engine. This was to improve connectivity and reduce resistance and hopefully to prevent any little bit of rust from screwing things up.

My car has exactly 45k miles and from time to time I get the Engine malfunction/limp mode indicator. So I thought new spark plugs may be in order. Went to the local dealer and found out that they are $27 each
The parts guy said that if it was his car he would not replace the spark plugs at this point, as BMW parts are designed to last 80-100k miles. So I left without buying. Any other source for those spark plugs? ECS tuning has them for $19.50 each incl. shipping&handling. After reading the horror stories here I am reluctant to order from 3rd party sources. I am going to take the spark plugs out and have a good look at them. I may post pics later. Any advice? Last edited by germ; 01-18-2014 at 06:05 PM.. |
