No gasket, just use Loctite 5970 gasket sealant. A shop with a lift would probably charge 2-3 hours to drop the diff, replace the cover and refill and reinstall the diff.

Just wanted to update this thread with some information that might be of interest to some of you. It turns out there's a fined cover that also fits the 128i diff (TYP 188L). It's from the E60 5er, but O believe also comes standard on some 6er and X class models. I believe the p/n is 33117528319.
Fitment is more or less direct, with minor modifications required. My diff builder (Jim Blanton at Performance Gearing) said he had to use a 15mm spacer and a longer bolt. No trimming of fins was required on my 128i with the smaller 188L diff - although I am running a MagnaFlow cat-back, so the stock exhaust might have clearance issues (although I kind of doubt it).

Bringing this thread back from the grave. I'm determining easiest route to fabricate the spacer. Either buy the 1.25" OD threaded standoff or buy 5/8" thick aluminum plate and use hole saw 1-1/2". Its been ~ 2years since you guys figured this out. It would seem more straight forward to buy the round stock and drill the ID and cut to length. I even have reamers 15/32", 1/2", 17/32", and 9/16" that I bought for a waste gate porting job. Much better in terms of not grabbing and twisting. I have access to a neighbor's decent drill press too. I won't need to trim the fins on my 650i cover as I have a custom exhaust that has a little more clearance. I'm trying to go one further than you all by getting a drain hole installed. Either will have to cut a fin out of way down below fill port or (what I really want to do) have a hole tapped into the bottom of the final drive casing at same M22x1.5" thread that fill port plug is. That way I can use 2 same plugs and the 14 mm allen socket tip to access them. This last thing isn't a mandatory. I already purchased an aluminum weld bung for the cover drain option with the M22x1.5 femaile threading. Talking to machine shop about tapping the case option. They don't sound too thrilled though. I spoke with another veteran machinist named Techevo that did his own machining to install a wavetrac. He has an absolutely fabulous thread showing his professional level work. I'll go find that thread and paste it in here for your amusement. Techevo feels I should disassemble the ring gear/LSD from the casing prior to having the case tapped for M22. Talking with Harold about this. If I go this route, I will have the axle stubs installed without the seals installed so that I don't destroy the seals and have to purchase new ones. He would just put the seals in the shipping container for post tapping use. We will see. I'm going the wavetrac option with Harold at HP Autosport doing the conversion for me. Techevo's LSD thread
I came back and realized i never provided this kick butt thread he put together. Enjoy.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=techevo Also, per my above post, I did have a custom spacer machined out of aluminum 1.25" OD x 0.562" ID X 0.625" thick. It was costly at $75 but it was also Christmas. If anyone needs a spacer, I know i guy that will sell them for $26 plus shipping. He and i hang out over on e90post/m57 diesel section. His user name is whitbread. He is a wavetrac dealer is anyone is interested in converting over to LSD. |
