BTW... sport mode on the throttle response and S mode on the Auto DCT is just as fun. Go test drive it again.

dual clutch gearboxes are fantastic in paddle/manual mode....still not as involving as a real manual gearbox IMO----but great nonetheless! |

I think it is a fantastic compromise if you need a comfortable DD but still want something fun to drive. When I bought it that is exactly what I wanted and traded in my S2000 for it. Now that I have it as a good DD though, I miss having a raw, proper drivers car. The S2000 was the softest car I had ever owned before the 1er though, so that may be why it feels so disconnected to me.

The normal auto mode is supposed to feel granny-like. It exists to get you the mileage you need to offset your bad behavior the other 90% of the time

My reason for not going DCT among others is it only comes with the N55 if I understand correctly.
It was N54 awesome motor with steptronic (boring as shit to me) or the 6MT that I got. I BELIEVE all the DCT 135's are only N55s. I wanted the twin turbo. JB4 N54 is a blast. |

The DCT in manual mode it is just as fun as a 6mt, but in a different way. I rarely have it in D unless i have other people in the car.

6MTs suck. I'm going to swap a 5speed auto transmission into my 1M. I'm not even going to install an overdrive off button.

Spent this past weekend driving curvy roads in vermont. This is my first paddle shift car after 20+ years of stick shifts. I LOVE my DCT. The feeling of hurtling towards a curve, flick, flick, downshift from 4th to second immediately, take the curve, mash on the gas, flick, flick, back in 4th, etc. etc. is a wonderful feeling. It leaves you 100% focused on the driving, taking the curves, and not on shifting. I think all the haters have not been in a DCT car on a fun twisty road.

I really like my 2012 with a DCT, but all of my other cars are manual. This was a nice departure, but I would buy a manual if I had a "do over". Nothing against the DCT...just personal preference. They are great cars with either transmission.

There is such a thing as no-lift-to-shift that a lot of tunes provide on turbo'd cars. This allows you to keep the throttle wide open between shifts so that you don't lose boost in between gears. Now back to the topic, the manual holds power better which is my main reason for liking it better. If I was going to keep the car stock, I might consider a DCT. But that kind of defeats the purpose of getting a highly tuneable car like these for me. |

This is the drawback that i don't like. Id really love to turn up the boost and not worry about the clutches.

Yes, pretty sure the M3/M4 uses the newer Getrag DCI700 (same as the M5 I believe) whereas the E8*/E9* 135i/335i/M3 uses the older (& lower torque capacity) Getrag DCI600 unit.
