Installed this today.
For those worried about it throwing out your alignment (camber) if you do it with the car on the ground, the weight of the car holds your alignment in place. It's definitely a DIY job. I did have one issue where even when the center bolt was torqued to spec the bars either side still had vertical movement an extra washer on the bolt fixed it. Not sure why this was an issue maybe these bolts are one time use? |

yeah, I agree. I test fitted the black ac cover thingy last night and it hits the studs on the strut tower rings on both sides. the studs are about 1 cm too tall. Going to grind them down with my angle grinder this weekend. Just a heads up for others considering this mod, that it is not 100% plug and play, at least for me. I could bolt the plastic cover down and it would probably work the way it is, but I like things to fit 100% so I will be grinding down the studs.

I'm replacing my shocks and suspension with the M3 links. Seriously considering also doing this mod to my 135i(N54)... I just don't know IF I should go with a 1M version or with the M3 version of this strut brace.
The M3 has that one piece center "V" while the 1M uses two arms with an open "fork" and a bolt to secure the center sections. I'm leaning towards the M3 unit. Any thoughts? EDIT... I just priced out both braces online over here on Leebmann24.de... Schmiedmann.de was even more expensive! M3 unit = 410 euros 1M unit = 194 euros I think I will be going with the 1M brace. Dackel

I suggest using the 1M strut bar because it is a direct fit on E82 cars without needing any modification of the plastic components. If you choose the M3 version there is work needed to create sufficient clearance to fit the alloy fork in the centre section.
The advantage of the M3 version is that its made entirely from alloy. The 1M version has alloy strut top yokes from the M3, but uses steel tubes similar to the basic E82 version. Weight difference will be very minimal IMO. |

Are the studs removable?
Edit: the studs on mine are welded on. I'm contemplating drilling them out and tapping the holes. There isn't much room for nuts underneath on the right side. Last edited by ferocity02; 03-14-2022 at 10:53 PM.. |

Nevermind! The studs are indeed threaded in. Super easy to back them out with a pair of vice grip pliers. I chased the threads with a tap after removing the studs. Then I replaced them with 25mm long low profile socket head cap screws from McMaster. They are still very close to the cowl, so I put a piece of foam tape on the cowl to absorb any noise if they hit. I also tried ultra low profile screws but the hex cannot take 25 ft-lbs before it rounds out.

Ridiculous
$78 just for the 6 countersunk nuts. F***ing ridiculous. I got a used M3 strut brace kit, thinking I was gonna save some money, but didnt come with the damn nuts. Now I gotta buy the 2 1M strut bars and these overpriced nuts....Maybe I can recoup some money by reselling the M3 brace arms and center piece.

I just did this mod, went with the 1M set up and M3 cowl, now I can access the coilovers for camber/damper adjustments easily 😎

I welded some stuff up to the stock M3 aluminum braces.
