You remember when 99% of the ladys wore dresses. I really miss those days.

A German friend of mine passed away recently. I wanted to send flowers to his funeral, but I needed to clear it with the church folks. I used Google Voice to call them from my laptop. It was like talking to somebody in the same room. Clear and no delay at all. And it only cost 1 cent per minute.

I say this because I remember calling home from Korea in the 70s. I had to travel to Seoul and have an operator place the call, then I sat in a booth and yelled into the phone. The delay was awful. It made it hard to carry on a conversation. In the 80s in Germany the phone service was better, but still there was a delay and it was 5DM (about $2) for a few minutes. You had to have a fistful of 5DM coins to have any sort of decent conversation.

Internet calling is truly amazing.

When I was in Jr High I had a teacher with a strong Southern accent and who used "Funk & Wagnalls" as a generic term for "dictionary." When she was agitated and couldn't find her dictionary, she'd get a bit high-pitched and talk really fast. We all got the biggest kick out of what it sounded like she was saying when she was yelling "I can't find my Funk & Wagnalls!!"

^^Truth!

If we just think about how many things are better than the "good old days", it is actually pretty amazing. While I was reading your post, I was thinking in the back of my mind about working in Amsterdam in the '90s and having to use a dial up modem to connect to our California office. It was slow but what I remember most was that god-awful sound.

If we go back far enough, it was party lines and operators to make calls outside our area.

I can now communicate for free instantly with friends and family all over the world. It's truly incredible.

Ironic that #4 (NY Yankees player/manager/umpire-shoe-dirtier Billy Martin) died in a drunk-driving crash in 1989.....
