While this is true, the fact that I've spent many an hour doing proper paint maintenance and correction is also a major contributor.

Nah, having run gloss black wheels on my white Audi S3 I decided I'd stick with a darker colour, but something closer to a glossy gunmetal finish. I sent a few pictures of what I was after to a friend of mine who owns a wheel repair/refurb place and he came up with the colour.

Excuse the dust, but this is about the most colour accurate picture I have of the paint in a daylight setting:
