It didn't see anywhere that BMW marketed the 1 series as a way to get into the brand at a lower cost. The 1 series is not new. It is to North America. And, it competes in the smaller car series in the Euro market, where it is sold de-contented. This 1 in the NA is more like a V6 Mustang to save money, or a V8 for the performance. Also, I could care less what 7 series owners think of the 1, just like I couldn't care less what 5 series owners thought of my E46 325i. Other than size and more money, what does a 5 or 7 get you really? I agree, it's the "image merchants" that have the problem, and I say, fine, it's not my thing. I prefer to drive. |

I think a 335i coupe would be a slightly better car, although haven't driven one yet but I have driven the sedan. The chassis on 3 series platform is more stable then ours for sure. I've been doing some research on the next generation 1 series. Makes me think the big changes will come in 2011/2012 with the new model. US will get 135i and 130i for sure 325 and 275 hp respectively! Not sure if the 5 door or diesel will come (i'm betting it wont American's (no offense) don't buy diesel.) Canadians I think would buy more and more 5 doors just based on the fact that we like small practical cars. Never the less I think a 5 door wont come . Please bring them over BMW |

Performance-wise I would disagree. The 135i feels a bit more solid and nimble. Overall though, I think the difference is quite marginal. |

Also, I don't know if "stable" is the word I would use. My 135i is quite stable, to me just as stable as the 328/335i coupes and sedans I tested. The 3 coupe does have a bit more room, but then, we're getting into more weight again, and back to the old tired, "why not just get a 3 anyway?" The 3 feels too big for a sport coupe to me, just like Audi A5. The A5 is gorgeous, much nicer than the 3 coupe. But, it's BIG. It looks bigger than the A4 sedan I just turned in before getting my 135i. Maybe for some of us, we wanted a the same refinement of the 3 series, but in the size of the 1. And, given the modest cost savings, I think BMW can give that to us. Simply refine the 1, refine the mechanical tuning, refine the interior design to gain a bit more room instead of just increasing size. The size of the 1 is just fine, it just needs some design tweaking. I do think that BMW should have spent more time and effort to sort out the 1 series sport suspension more. The base setup if fine for those who like comfort. Given the "sporting" intent of the 1 series, I find it's not as refined over rough pavement and bumps as the 3 series is. The 3 swallows the bumps and spits out smooth. The 1's rear tends to "hop", as it seems overly aggressive on rebound damping. Maybe they didn't have enough room to give as much spring/damper length, so they used more rebound to help the suspension from "packing" down over a series of bumps, but then they should have used better valve control. Heck, for the money we spent on the 135i's, I would have spent an extra $800 for basic magnetic controlled dampers, nothing extremely fancy, just a better way to control fluid movement and thus spring control. I don't know, could be. But, it needs better tuning. That's my biggest complaint of the 1 in regards to driving it. I don't feel the under-steer that many have complained about. Perhaps if/when I take it to the track I'll notice it more there. However, I bought my 135i for daily use, and in that role it's excellent fun so far, except for the noted suspension things. |

Back on topic?
Anyway back on topic. Its just a year over year refresh so Im sure it will be minor things. Im hoping:
1. An extreme color like Dakar yellow 2. Addition of satin silver trim option 3. Redo the sport and msport packs on 135i so that the m steering wheel and shifter only appear on the m-sport models. Decrease the regular sport pack to $800 or so. 4. Make bluetooth without assist standard. Make illuminated vanity mirrors standard. 5. Clear corner lamps would be nice, but I dunno if thats a legal thing? Price increase kept to $500 (so the 128i is $29,900)

LoL nah...I have decided on a brand new 2010 135i or a used 2008-2009 M3...
When it comes time to order in September if there are no good used M3s on the market I will get the 135i

Just wait for a good M3. Honestly I'm not an option/color guy if the car is good and is sold at a good price then I will get it. It's rainning used m3's in the states.

So you are saying North America isn't seeing a redesign for 2011? Or does anyone really know for sure?
I really want this car, but I'm not sure 2 doors is going to cut it. If there is even a chance of 4+ doors in 2011, I will wait instead of getting something else sooner. |
