As long as it's a true M product, does not really matter what they call it. Would have just been nice for the newer generation of BMW owners to have the M1 badge because of the ladder. Some consider this "badge whoring" maybe, we do live in a material world ( I feel like Madonna ) lol.. and many people still judge you by what shoes you wear, what you drive etc... If you are a young man, working hard and going to school and coming from a geo metro...and now own a BMW there is self confidence..proudness to have achieved ownership of this symbolistic vehicule...so the badge whore theory does not hold... This badge was always seen and known as the next step to success.. by regular working folk...and is something to be proud of. Like I said, we do live in a world where unfortunately people do judge by the cover of a book...why else would women shave their armpits?? And yes, men now tend to there shrubs...looks is sometimes important And finally , for the badge whore theorists....If man evolved from apes, why the hell are there still apes on this planet???

Scott has already answered the question. With the new personalization program, you'll be able to pick your own damn name.
Seriously, it's fun to speculate, but I question the judgment of anyone who's wigging out over something as trivial as the name. |

I don't think people are being badge whores by wanting it to be named a certain way to avoid confusion. Plus, it'll be one more reason for people to doubt that it is a true M-car as opposed to being a 1-series with M stuff sprinkled on it. That and the fact that I'm anal about naming conventions.

People can doubt all they want. At least I know what it is I dont care. It is a bonifide M car. Them naming it an M1 would be a great cherry on top of the cake.

I did PM Scott after I had heard from more than one source that the name M1 was a definite no-no, at the time the name that kept cropping up was 135tii as the most likely alternative but as Scott has said the letter M will be mentioned in it's name then I am of the opinion that it will be one of these.
1M, 135iM or my personal favourite M135is. If the car isn't called the M1 or 1M for that matter then I am of the belief that this is down to the fact that the 1 series is close to the end of it's life cycle and as there has never been an 'M' with such a short life it would probably be better to save the proper name for the new 1 series. I fully expect that in the future BMW will do "an Audi" and offer two levels of performance cars per model range, possibly a tii and the M, this would obviously allow for much of the current M's practicality and luxuries to remain in the 'tii' branded cars with a slight drop in output and performance, that way letting the 'M' car to return to their more focused roots of the past and build a true driver's car in more limited numbers thus reducing the need to meet the crippling emission regulations that will be the death of the breed. |

Footie, we have not seen a single spy shot of the next generation 1 series coupe. We have only seen the hatch. That means it is coming first. The next one coupe could be a good year away after that. That counts for something. 2013 is a good ways away. BMW did sell the E46M3 along side the non-M E9X, right? I dont think being at the end of the life cycle has much to do with it. Why? That would even strengthen the appeal of the M1/1M. It would be rare and very sought after. If BMW chose not to do an M for the current gen of 1er we would be weary if they would do it for the next. I'm of the opinion that the name cant be too long. M135is sounds like the car has an identity crisis. That sounds almost as bad as the Z4's new naming.

In my opinion the only time that the mighty badge 'M1' should ever be reused is for something truly worthy of it and in my mind that means a totally radical supercar that takes the company to new heights. After all would you expect Ferrari to give the name GTO to it's bottom run model no matter how good it actually was. Last edited by footie; 04-22-2010 at 11:23 AM.. |

I always try to look at this from the other side of the fence. If I owned an original M1, (I had looked into acquiring one 30 years ago), I would not be pleased if BMW named a 2 door 4 seat relatively high production car, after a unique mid engined (only mid engine BMW ever made) collectable (first M car ever made) super car (while it was not the fastest car of its era, it was classified as a super car in its day).
I am proud of BMW for respecting their own heritage and not giving in to public whim. |

2 other cars with the GTO name, the '84-'86 288 GTO, and the recent 599 GTO. BMW outshines Ferrari in that regard. I will place my bet on the name M135i or M135 |

I am a big fan of short and sweet. I loved it when a 325i was really a 3 series car with a 2.5 liter, fuel injected inline 6. Very easy to understand, very simple... M1, 1M, M Coupe would all work. Anything with 135 in the name is just retarded--because this car is CLEARLY not going to be a 135. It will be very different, distinct, and special, and should be named accordingly.

I really do not understand why so many folks think the use of this name or that name now is sacreligious because it was used on a different car somewhere in the past..... Does it make your car any less special? No....not at all. Trust me--your '00 M Coupe based on the Z3 will never be confused with this car......
