I may be close to buying a set of S6 LEDs and then will have to decide whether to fit them on my RS4 as the pic on pp1 I posted, or on the 135i. The fit is easier on the RS as the foglight trim gets directly swapped with the S6 mesh grill+LED and requires no modification (but wiring may be tricky, hence why I am doing more research).
I took out my fog light mesh cover on the RS4 and measured it against the 135i. At its widest opening (at the bottom of the vent ducts), the 135i's bumper seems exactly the same size, so it is quite possible that the S6 lights can fit in without any modification to the bumper on the 135i (if there is, that would be a deal breaker for me). Also, the S6 lights are very thin, so it won't impact airflow. Question that remains is wiring, with no fog lights, I have no idea if any pre-wiring exists (I have the Euro switch which lights up a green fog-light indicator in the dash, but that doesn't tell me much). I recon the easiest would be to hook up the LEDs with the DRL halos for power and you can disable them through the OBD DRL option if you don't want them on all the time. But this is all just very preliminary brainstorming... I won't do anything on the 135i if it requires bumper modification and contributes to a look that isn't 100% factory-like (that to me is the definition of rice). Here is what it look like on the RS:

Bumping because I got stuck in a hideous fog the other day. Has anybody made friends with a BMW tech who has acess to the wiring diagrams?
Or has anybody tried to contact Studie? |

I'll have that info too, it is very possible the OE manufacturer is Hella. I am sure Audi didn't spare much expense when selecting a subcontractor, they have historically used Hella and don't see them deviating for the LED DRLs to a manufacturer in China, which most likely the ones on Ebay originate from!

Hella...even better. I would be interested in some type of group buy (and proper fitment instructions). Thanks.

We need to find someone who is getting a new front bumper and try finding a way to retrofit recessed fog lights from a e46 sedan... who feels like cutting?

I am dead set on doing this when I purchase my front aero kit. You can instal the lights all that you want, but without a place to plug them in they are usless

The wiring is the least of my worries personally, getting through the firewall can be done, there is 12v under the hood, you can trigger them however you desire, or you can just do a switch... I personally would just do a flat mount switch under the knee bolster (I am lazy), if you feel like getting creative get the fog light switch from the 128, or trigger them off the parking lamps if you want...

^the foglamp swith from the 128 is part of a circuit. I you don't plug into that circuit the switch doesn't work. I want it to be as oem as possible and the wiring already exists. It's just a matter of finding it.

You sir = much more patient person than myself, but I like where your head is at. Now I guess we need to get our hands on a 128 and start "looking" at it... loaner time? (joking)

This is why I am looking for a wiring diagram for a 128. I figure I'll buy a euro 128i switch. That way i'll have the front and rear fogs

One of these days when I have more time I think I will bite the bullet and get a pair of S6 LEDs. I measured them, should fit in our opening, they are thin enough that won't adversely impact airflow (particularly to the oil cooler), and as far as hooking up, easiest would be through the DRLs as opposed to looking for the fog light circuitry (if there even is one on the 135i). But I am sure there will be some fabrication needed (e.g. custom clips to fit the bumper), so it's really a function of having the time, which is in scarcity lately...

I have the euro foglight switch installed on my 135 which was left over from my E90. It has a switch for both front and rear fog lights. I assume it is the same switch as the one for the 128 to enable rear fog lights. When the front fog light switch is activated, a green fog light symbol lights up on the instrument cluster.
This means that there is a known signal available when the 135 front fog switch is on. My ultimate plan is to tap into that signal to activate the fog lights. I am assuming this will be a low level signal not capable of sourcing very much current. But I should be able to switch a transistor which can in turn switch a relay to turn on the front fog lights. This will be a long term project since I need to do a lot of research to find the right fogs. I may do some experiments to get a relay to switch but probably not in the near future. I thought I would throw this idea out here in case someone wanted to persue it before I get around to it. Lou Last edited by voerman; 04-21-2010 at 06:25 PM.. |

Have you given any thought in the last year as to whether a transistor/relay is the way to go or perhaps a Darlington type solid state switch would be better? Have you measured the voltage at the dashboard indicator when it is illuminated? Any details you could share would be helpful. Thanks, Lou |
