There are only 2 options with PnP brakes. Brembo GT and BMW Performance Brakes. But there are hundreds of options out there. All that is needed is a custom bracket which is a common thing to do. AP Racing CP5555 6 pistons caliper is the minimum I will be going for, but may go for another AP Racing caliper with larger pistons.

Maybe the BMW performance brake kit has the stainless steel inserts.....since everyone has said the only difference noticed so far is the color (yellow versus gray) of the caliper itself......

I guess when choosing new caliper, the availability and choice of the pad to suit your use is very very important.

Well the issue it seems right now isn't so much tracking with the OEM Brembo's. We've done that and had no problems. It seems like certain track pads like the Cool Willy generate a lot of heat which might lead to this problem. I doubt anyone is swapping to track pads to do mountain runs. That and it is not safe to be running track pads on the street. Track pads generally do not stop very well when cold (at times some are worse than OME pads when cold) and need to be warmed up. If you're worried about safety, running track pads on the street is not a good idea.

So far the Brembo GT kit is the only kit out. One of the best things about using Brembo products is that since they're the biggest manufacturer, every single brake manufacturer will make pads for their stuff.
One of the issues running AP stuff is, even though they get support from pad manufacturers, not everyone will had pads. You'll have less selection of pads. Now if you want to run a pad from a certain manufacturer, they might not have it available. Then you'll either have to beg them to make it and wait or have it custom kit will cost you more in the long run. Off the shelf stuff is generally cheaper and readily in stock so that's an added benefit. Quote:

Well, first off, they don't fit the OEM wheels because the Brembo GT brakes are bigger. The caliper is bigger. The rotor is also bigger. They don't fit the OEM wheels because the face of the OEM wheel sinks to far in. I do think that if you put a 5mm spacer in the front wheel, it'll clear.
Our Forgeline wheels clear with plenty of space. Here's a pic of how big they are. That and if you're racing, chances are you've already swapped wheels. OEM wheels are heavy and the front rims is narrow. You really need to have wider front wheels in the front if you want to be competitive. |

Ok guys, I'm a bit confused;
I drive my 135i fairly hard on the road and am planning a couple of trackdays with stock calipers and pads. Should I be worried about this issue? Jack |

Yes Prof, track pads aren't great on the street as it can't get up to temp. But something "mild" like cool wily is actually bloody good on the road! When I get my car back you can give it a go. It's only the really hardcore race pads that makes a difference. THose are the once you have to change and use on the track. For example, Taka told me that he has a set of 300-900 degrees (celcius) pads that obviously he isn't going to try to use on the street!
Btw, I don't know if anyone of you have ever measured the temp. The first set of track pads I used has an in-built temp gauge in that in changes colour over a certain temp. It got over 600 degrees celcius but could be much higher than that as it only measures to that. So it begs the question (especially in light of the cracking pistons - if it's due to temp), do we need brake ducts? |

WAY, the science of all this is beyond me! it looks like we are in the "feel" territory here. you decide, and i'll go with that. if there is any chance of failure, you'll easily discover it before i every will.

Yeah. Race pads have this problem. When I brought the 300-900 PMu racing 999 pad (the one that SuperCheap Auto V8 supercar uses!). I was intented to use it on the track (track only pad), until I found that there is instruction of taking the brake duct of a race car off in the event of cold weather haha.... so it stays in the garage and I am happy with my 0-800 Project Mu pad.

:iono: it likes to eat your APP rotor because they eat when they are cold??? coz the Project Mu race pad warns people using that on street because they lack performance, wear out pad and rotor easily on cold pad temps.

Well, this issue ain't gonna affect me.........I've just ordered a set of AP 6-piston front calipers to be fitted behind Hartge 19" wheels
Should take about six weeks before I get 'em fitted. Report and pics to follow...... Cheers Jack |

Way,
The one to get is CP5575. This is the one listed for the 335i. In fact my specialist (Birds BMW) have measured up and they feel that the standard 335i AP BBK will fit the 135i (possibly with minor modifications to bracketry etc). They will not fit under the standard wheels though. Jack |

Well, Bird's have already fitted the kit as listed for the 335i to several 335i's but not yet to a 135i. The disc diameter as fitted to the 335i is 355mm and the car seems to stop ok, so we're going with that!
The larger you go with rotors the more chance you will have of clearance issues with 18" wheels. What wheels do you intend to run? I am having a job finding any decent fitments. Jack |
