Sorry, I don't have any data from before the update. My HPFP had been acting up since before I got the BT scan tool anyway, so it wouldn't have been the most useful data.

I posted this right after my wifes car was flashed and now it has been a few months so I checked the MPG again for her weekly commute and it is still exactly the same 21.3 last week and 21.5 this week. I only drive the car on occasion but to me everything still feels great and no long cranks. I spend a lot of time racing and testing motorcycles and unless we put them on a dyno the seat of the pants evaluations are often quite variable. Ours makes us smile every time we drive it.

Well, I've been having long cranks for a while and finally brought my car into the dealer. I'm on my second fuel pump. I just got told that my car is currently getting the software update and a new fuel sensor according to what BMW told them to do. I said I dont think thats going to solve the problem. The dealer agreed saying that they might have to hold onto the car because they feel that the fuel pump needs to be changed. We will see but I have a good feeling my car won't come back feeling the same.

Well, got a call from the dealer and said my car is done. The check engine light is off and everything seems to be fine. He said BMW didn't authorized the fuel pump change but just the Software and sensor. The funny thing was the dealer told me his hands are tie and that the fuel pump might fail in the future. I will tell everyone how it feels when I pick it up later today.

yep... thats what happened to me, and my car is sitting at the dealer for what is expected to be a good deal of time.
SA says, bmw recalled all the 4th gen pumps (or whatever the latest was) and no eta on the new pumps (so my car is taking a little vacation from me). I heard rumors the new pumps were by a new manu which makes sense since in the span of what... 2-4 years, and 4+ revisions... they still cant make it work. |

A quick FYI. Got reduced power mode on my way into work yesterday, so it went right back to the dealer. This time it was the VANOS solenoid. It had apparently been broken for a while, as the car feels a lot peppier, especially down low. Lag is barely noticeable. It's back to making me a little scared sometimes like it did when new.
Maybe you guys with severe slowdown have some other undiagnosed issue. |

Are you saying that the latest known pump (..943) has been recalled by BMW? If you don't mind, there are literally thousands of us that would like to know the details on this. Can you find out EXACTLY what part # pump they said is being recalled?

I know the SA had told me about the 943 pumps a couple months ago, and I recall hearing there was one more pump version after that.
Keep in mind this is all hearsay, from various bmw forums and my local dealer. I'd guess that if all was well, or there was a pump, they'd rather fix it, than me have the loaner. if 943 is the current and I am to believe what they are telling me, BMW doesnt have a HPFP right now to put in my car... this from BMW germany. That would lead me to believe 943 is no good. |

Ok, its been two days since I got my back from the dealer. So far things seem to be going well. The car has been starting right up both in the morning and when I'm leaving for work. The power seem to be the same really havent noticed anything. The weather has been fairly cool in NY so
turbo's tend to run better in cooler days so maybe thats why I havent notice any power lost. The dealer replaced the low pressure sensor and did the software upgrade. Lets see how long it last. LOL |

My SA told me the 943 pumps are done and replaced with the 933 pumps. He also mentioned that bmw has brought the pump design back to HQ and are taking matters into their own hands. Take that for what its worth. Imo these will continue failing.

Here's my email to my SA
XXX, Can you give me an offcial update and run down of what that software was and did and the components that were affected. I hate to be such a pain but the car is definately performing differently than it used to, no offense to the tech, he didn't drive my car on a daily basis since the car was new, so although my car is still quick, it has some serious hesitation and less turbo boost than before. Also, no offense to you but I think i have the right to know what exactly was changed in my car that i Paid 46k for, I truly feel it's is behaving differently since the new software was installed. Please let me know if I need to go to the next level with this. tim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: xxxxxx] Sent: Thu 6/10/2010 7:17 PM To: Tim Fortin Subject: RE: programming Hi Tim, Bmw technical confirmed that the software update was not related to engine performance. It did not contain any new programs for turbos or engine speed or anything like that. I know you asked about switching the programming back to the old software. We did not hear back about that yet. Though my forman says is we can reinstall the old software the radio issue would probably come back, this software fixed that issue. I will be in touch again Thank you xxxxx

Approximately how long was it from the date of the software update to when you started seeing the "overboost" situation again?

My Car is not having extremely long cranks, like it did before the software patch, but def doesn't start on the first crank either. (It used to before the pump started crappin out)
Now it takes about 3-5 cranks on a consistent basis for it to fire up) No cranks longer than that though.

well the Rolling Stones mentioned this 35 years AGO "HERE IT COMES, HERE IT COMES ANOTHER 19TH HPFP NERVOUS BREAKDOWN'..... well your car is in need of a new HPFP asap, with plugs, injectors, all checked out to go along with the flash then all will be good ..i am hoping for a good 15,000 miles at least before any more issues...but will see. I guess we have till 120,000 miles to go through as many pumps as needed

I'm at 27,000 miles and still (knock on wood) no HPFP issues, not even long cranks. Hit and miss maybe?

My SA was telling me Monday that BMW is on their "4th rebuild" of the HPFP. He also said no pattern to failure. He has one customer that has a 335 putting out over 400hp. Still on original HPFP. Go figure.

did anybody tried remapping after the new software update? Any luck?
My car got the new software due to long cranks and it seemed normal afterwards (read: no power losss etc). I left it at another garage to do ecu remap (dinan equivalent in UK) and they are having some troubles with the new encryption... Anybody did dinan after the new software?

I don't know. I am at 20k in miles with 19k tuned and I have never had a long crank. I just got the new software today and will put my tune back in today. The car seemed to drive the same after the update.
