In 2009 anything is possible. As I mentioned in posts similar to this before, the problem is the engine. N54 is too good of an engine (read too mod friendly). Give this engine another 2yrs+ of tingering, realiable 400hp+ is emminent and common place. HP rules, unless BMW is thinking drastic weight reduction, and no cabon fiber roof, trunk, hood will not do. I'm talking serious weight think Elise...and that will never happend.
Let's say for kicks, BMW put the e92 M3's v8 in the "M1". 420hp and 295Ibs plus a weight reduction of 300Ibs and some M goodies. will that then make a strong case for M1? To me barely...I'll be perfectly happy in a PROcede v3,4,5 (Whatever it might be by then) with more hp , more torque and more $$ in the bank. |

An expensive m1 / m2 has not a lot of selling potiential. Just see what a new m3 costs that s not from this planet anymore. That s too much for a weekend fun/track car.

As much as I would LOVE to acquire a 135i I think I may be slightly upset if they release a badder M version shortly afterwards. Primarily because I wouldn't have waited for it.
Anyone else feeling this way? |

I feel the same way so I figure I'll just wait till the newness wears off the 135i and see what BMW does. If there is no M, at least you will be able to get a better deal on the 135i.

a new m3 is no weekend fun/track car anymore i know. But that s not the point it s to expensive for that purpuse. Bmw M should make a affordable M car for the people who like a agile car to run around for fun on backroads or some trackday. I don t wanna play with a big cruise ship on track like the m3 is.
So a M car of the 1 coupe would be perfect. I am waiting to. I have still lots of fun with my 130i msport and waiting on more news on an M version. Rumours will flow when the most 135i are sold. And if not i can always buy a new or even better a secondhand 135i afterwards. |

OK - In light of some posts on this thread and the general consensus that this car is a bit porky, here's an approach I'd take to an M1 (as 'scott26' sez, the 'M1' product plan is being set before the board for approval).
Shave 300+ pounds off the existing car by: - going to a tweaked version of the N52 engine - carbon fiber roof - aluminum hood/rear decklid and front fenders - no stinking runflats and superlight wheels Then we can have the LSD and a spiffy stiff suspension to go with it. 'scott26' any comments? |

Hugo, that's a great 'M1' want list. Only thing I would add is the Dual Clutch Transmission, which may or may not reduce weight. IMO a tweaked N52 should be able to make 300 crank horsepower, if not a little more. This would be a great car for you flatlanders, but not up in the mountains where I live.

Because 1 series platform will be refreshed in 2010 so unless BMW plans on delivering a 1 series M which last for 2-3 years then I don't see a M1 on current platform.
If they are going to releasing it before the refresh then there must be some sort of M1 prototype around. Or perhaps it is as elusive as the lochness monster that no one has been able to snap a picture of it.

It will be called the M87..!
It harkens back to smaller cars and their clandestine naming policy of those niche cars back then. BMW has perserved DNA of all their previous models in vials... can be used on a moments notice to produce something hot and iconic. Sound Familiar? -Garrett |

My ideas:
Call it the M135, or M182T Keep the TT 6-cyl, slightly enlarge turbos, slightly raise redline, slightly raise boost. Peak torque from 3000 rpms and up, with HP peaking at 7.2k, with a 7.5k redline. Turbos start to spool at 2200-2500 at that point. This would easily allow for 400-430ish crank HP while still running under 10psi of boost. They could call it 370 HP, to keep M3 guys from getting up in arms, and just leave the engine to put down 370-380 RWHP. This is achievable on stock turbos, and adding some slightly larger turbos would let you keep power over larger rev range (3k rpms-7.5k rpms), and run low boost. It would also allow for a csl, or zcp version with another 30-40hp without stressing anything. Add light-weight everything, along with an LSD, and even bigger, badder brakes (maybe M3 brakes). In addition, a bigger IC and oil cooler would be good ideas. Finally, perhaps a CSL version of the car. Turn up the boost slightly, open up the exhaust and intake a little more. Remove AC, Radio, Naviagtion, etc. Remove back seat. CF for hood, trunk, roof. I know that's a pipe dream, but the way BMW is stressing the connection between this car and the 2002, I wouldn't be suprised to see a "Club Sport" version at some point. |
