Some challenges today but Russell from Lonsdale Paint & Panel with some help from TUN3D’s build log nailed them. We could not fit the rh oil cooler duct due to the horn so a bracket was fabricated and fitted. Then as I do not have PPK2 I don’t have the second oil cooler to attach the duct too so a bit of fabrication saw a securing bracket made. Front bumper done!!

Homeward bound!!
Paint job and build looks stunning. Wheels to be fitted today and then just the exhaust to source. Great that the standard pipes pock out through the rear bumper. Thought I would throw in a before photo for comparison to this point as well. Insurance also done with Shannon's which now includes the modifications. Looking forward to driving it and enjoying it, couple of more interior surprises to come as well. |

That looks PHAT!
You should feel proud that you built this. Others take an easier road and just buy but this is a different kind of satisfaction isn't it?

Yes huge satisfaction it has come up really well. Wheels fitted yesterday with some rubbing issues in the rear under load. I think my shockers are stuffed so going to get that checked next week before I drive too much. Hopefully this will resolve issue. I have 10mm extra in the rear either side but this should not be the issue as this is a common mod with spacers in the US. The right rear wheel is catching on the forward edge where the guard edge goes from flat to factory roll. Teething!!

Yeah the 1M has flattened gaurds, if you have issues with rubbing, changing ride height or shocks will do nothing. If you hit a big enough bump it'll still rub. You'd need to modify/roll the gaurds, or convert the hubs to 335i or m3 hubs

"convert the hubs to 335i or m3 hubs"
Not quite true unless you mean swap in the whole hub carrier assembly. There is a custom solution to replace the 10mm wider 135i hubs detailed earlier in this thread. |

Thanks the hub change is an option as is rolling the guards but it should all work as I have said it is a common width using spacers. I drove home loaded with spare rims and I went slowly over a speed hump which pushed the wheel up. It did not rebound out and was actually about 2” lower than the left. When I jacked it up it did fall back into place so I think shockers have something to do with it? I did have a wheel alignment and the shop said the right rear was way out and he adjusted. When I look at both sides the left rear is under the guard and the right rear appears to be further out and actually right under the guard. I don’t know what a rear wheel alignment actually does but maybe over adjusted which has caused the rubbing? No panic will just work through the options!

Awesome job- it's looking great!
With the wheel specs you posted that rear fitment should be fine. May just be an alignment issue although Michelin tyre sizes can be a bit 'conservative'. I was looking into why my 295/30 PSS rub a bit even with some negative camber and it turns out they measure up the same as a 315/30! |

There is a hellava lot of rebound force from the spring. I'd be checking for something broken, badly bent/worn or disconnected that is causing resistance to free suspension travel. |

Yes agree off to a suspension place this week to get it looked at. The wheel alignment guy commented the right rear was so out of whack he thought my new paint job was because I had a prang. Which I haven’t so something is not right so I will start with the suspension and wheel alignment clue. Thanks

I had issue with rubbing on the rear, but only on one side..
After getting an alignment yesterday instead of 0.5mm toe I had 4mm of toe... Instead of this | the rear wheel which was rubbing was more like this / But yeah shame you didn't get guards rolled/modded before the respray |

Ok so a bit of a project reality check this week. As advised I got some scraping on the home trip after wheel fitment which actually grabbed the fwd edge of the right rear guard doing some reverse guard rolling damage. Pick shows how the lip has pulled out like a tooth. No major damage and if I roll the guards this will roll out.
Had to wait a couple of days for my body guy to roll it back flat but not properly repaired whilst I research and fault find. I guess the first thing is the suspension. As you know my focus has been on looks and I guess most who do this are building serious performance cars so suspension would be a natural and even first point of call. It would be safe to say my 160km 10 year old car has never had the suspension addressed. I had a full bmw factory service a year ago and this was not even mentioned. So I have booked into Pedders for a check and full jig alignment check to see if this will address the rubbing and sag in the right. The right rear also appears to be sticking out more but this could be due to the slight sag. I did take it back to the tire shop who said they adjusted the toe by 6mm on that rear wheel but it would have no impact on the position to the guard. The measurement difference of both sides of the car was 0.1mm difference so no obvious chassis issues. If not suspension but I will upgrade anyway since moving to non rft then I will check actual tire width but the best course of action and the most cautious will be rolling guards and hub modification. Although it is a weekend car I want the confidence to be able to jump in it with my kids and not worry about rubbing etc The car does look awesome with some latest pics below Last edited by asn993; 10-05-2018 at 08:51 PM.. Quick update. Suspension check completed by Peddars and everything checks out. Nothing broke nothing worn and all within tolerances. They said wheels and tires simply too wide for the guards. Leaves my head scratching a little so next step the 130i hub conversion. Once that is done I will decide to roll guards or repair inner lip scrape if there is any chance of rescraping

Did some research on the Cup 2 tyres. According to the Michelin site the tyre measures 10.7 inches on a 9.5 inch rim. Not sure the impact on a 10” rim but 10.7” equates to 272cm. My tyres are 265 so that accounts for an additional 7mm added to the width hence another reason for the rubbing.

That's my final solution. I simply don't want any hassle using the car with passengers or whatever so am going ahead with the hub conversion to be sure.

Ok update on rear wheel problem. I am now under pressure for a few reasons to get my car on the road so I have decided to solve the problem by changing wheels. The M359's were an impulse buy which should have fitted but they don't without work, parts and time.
However they have enabled me to work out what will fit so after much research I have ordered a set of MP JW matt bronze from MARS Performance. I have been able to bring the rears in by 16mm from their current position, which buys me the 10mm if I did the hub conversion and a few more in reserve to account for the wider than 265 (actual 272) Michelin Cup 2's. Whilst the hub conversion would have allowed me to keep the M359's I was not convinced that would have been enough given combination of the wider tyres and the hand built rear quarters which would not have the exactness of a factory pressing. I guess this solution also avoids mechanical work and costs with a fixed price solution. An excellent set of M359 wheels only (off a M3 Competition Pack) will be listed for sale in the next couple of weeks so PM if interested. |

Just rubbing on the right side?
Lift from the body. Loosen up the rear subframe mounting bolts and then pry it over towards the left and re-tighten while holding it there. A decent machine shop ought to be able to shave 2-3mm off the back of your wheels as well if necessary.

Cheers problem nearly solved. New wheels have made a huge difference but there was still a bit of rubbing. So further investigation has revealed the 135i wheel arch guard edge is completely different than the 1M. As we simply cut off the old lip and used it as the new template I have retained that setup. However the 1M is basically rolled the entire gurad length starting from where the guard connects to the rear of the side skirt. On the 135i there is about 6" of lip that is about 15mm wide. This is where my car rubs on the fwd edge of the guard not the top. On a 1M this lip is no more than 5mm. So getting guards rolled I will report back soon.
This has been holding completion up. Last edited by asn993; 11-29-2018 at 05:04 AM.. |
