no cats at all, no muffler and meth. You'll also need advil for long drives on the autobahn.

OK...so been thinking about going to Stelvio?
As exciting as JK's flamethrower is...we should start a new thread for it and shoot some actual pro-grade video which I can do....at our next gathering which is probably Guys and beer day....
As for Stelvio, looks like we have about 10 cars.... Should be a blast. Any suggestions for side trips/drives? Anyone look at the link and thought, Romania 2013...here we go?

Im driving down from Spangdahlem. I'll prob stay in a hotel in Stuttart the night before so I dont have to drive 10 freaking hours in one day.

Just a thought, we could all meet at Edelweiss lodge. Thats probably about the same cost as a reasonable hotel in Stuttgart. Nothing like starting the morning in the Alps!
oh yeah and Steven, I won't be hauling ass the whole way there cause once we leave Germany its gas out of pocket.... no Esso stations! Gotta think of gas conservation to save a little money unless some spirited driving is needed.

Would it make it easier if we start in Davos instead of Italy?

the place that you said you were looking at hotels by stelvio is about 2.5 hours from edelweiss. i think stelvio is still the good starting point.

I have to realy look at a map as see what route is best. When I went to Stelvio last summer I just drove South to Munich, then to Innsbruck and then over on the A12 autobahn until almost "Zams" and then took the road #180 thru "Nauders" where that old carved castle in the rocks is and towards Stelvio from there. I think once you cross into Italy the road #180 changes to "SS180". On my way back North(to DE) I went down that gravel road of Stelvio Pass... and into Swizerland(CH, Schweiz). Although that little village was pretty - I am not that crazy about Swizerland bc of their (high)prices for everything. That gravel road was a PITA too. Dack |

Ahhhh... I see where you are! Yes, I would probably just drive right by your area in Kiefersfelden/Kufstein. I knew that city sounded familar!! Lets wait to see what (and where) everyone else is coming from. But I think for myself this route via Innsbruck would be best. |

The gravel section was on the way down the pass into Swiss(CH). Yea... it was short section but nerve racking. Maybe 1 or 2 km's or so. Slow going(30kph) for me down that pass. At the top of the Stelvio Pass... after Bormio... (peak)... the road split. Most people drive LEFT going further down the pass into Italy. But you could also turn RIGHT and go into Swiss(CH). That is the way I drove back home. After I made that right... the road turned into a gravel section and then into a quaint small village. It was a short drive from there back into Italy and Austria. Here are some pics of the road after Bormio where I turned RIGHT down that gravel section... a blue haus near the fork in the road where I turned right down that gravel pass... This is where I turned RIGHT heading down that gravel pass road... once that gravel road ended... I came to this picturesque village in CH... |
