Scott - Thanks for the information. Keep it coming! Also, give Dr. Segler a high-five or a hug for me. What a guy!

Sounds good about the car, but let's be realistic here about attracting a younger generation. Sounds like this car is going to hover around the 50 thousand dollar mark, and short of young adults that are subsidized by their wealthy parents, they are not going to be luring kids away from their STIs, EVOs, even 370Zs and Mustangs.
$50,000 and 'affordable' should not be used in the same sentence. |

I'm in the same boat, mid twenties, dual income, low mortgage, never having kids, i would buy this while deployed if I can get it at the military sales price. Or we might buy a plane and make the 135 into an m1

If you're not living paycheck to pay check and are putting away at least 10% a year in an investment vehicle for retirement, then sure go for it. I'm curious what your list of cars is - i find there is a huge void in the 30k to 40k range for fun cars. I just noticed that the four I mentioned actually come with LSDs too! |

I don' think anyone should reasonably expect the M1 to compete with the Evo or STi on price and performance. Also, when they say they want to move into a younger market, I don't read that as a desire to have people in their early 20s as the target demogpraphic. I think it means they'd like to make the car more accessable for people other then wealthy 60 year olds, who are the primary buyers of M3s and M5s. |

If you think that $50k is a lot try moving to another country! In Australia base 135i will set you back $72k. The M1 will end up being in the $100-$110k mark here! Our $ is 92US cents for crying out loud... I am 28 and my car cost me $86k, we had a small 1 series meet last night and 5 out of the 7 that came were under 30... We work hard for our cars, but yes, we probably are on the higher income scale than most our age... |

Now how can they make money with the performance we demand? Bares bones interior - no nav, basic stereo with CD/aux jack, no electronic this or that, non power seats, etc . . . If they want this to be the spiritual sucessor to the E30M3, here's a good direction to go. |

I just don't see that selling, and I don't see them saving that much money by doing it either, unless they can pull the parts from the European models. Most people (me included) don't want a stripped down BMW. This is my daily driver, not a track car. If I wanted a track car, there are MUCH better choices for $50k than a 1 Series. I want a nice, comfortable, well optioned car that's also fast. The E30 M3 wasn't exactly stripped down. It was pretty well appointed for its time. Times have changed and BMW, as a premium brand, has to keep up with them. E30: |

Man I just love how the old E30s had that dashboard that was so highly angled towards the driver. If I recall correctly, 5 series and 6 series from the time had a similar angle on the dash. Good pic dude! To me the 1er is the 1st BMW to get back to this angled dash. Not as pronounced as the older BMWs, but still better than a 3 series. I would like to have the window controls there in the center though.

You're not going to loose a significant amount of weight stripping the electronics out of the car. The entire stereo system will only weigh about 25lbs, and you're not going to get rid of it completely. You're also not going to get it without power windows, because the door cards and crank assemblies don't exist, and they're not going to design and produce them for a few thousand units. The bottom line is, unless you REALLY start gutting the car, and I mean things like carpet and sound deadening, you're not going to save enough weight to make a difference, and at that point you've narrowed the audience so much that you're not going to be able to sell enough of them to hold the price down. This is a BMW, not a Lotus. There's a damn good reason we're not all driving Exiges right now. |

Hey....that's my car!!!! Yes....There is certainly an amazing feeling when strapped in the cockpit of the e30 M3! Not nearly the fastest car by today's standards...but that feel just can't be duplicated. There is something magical about '80s BMWs and Porsches. That teutonic feel!! One with the road!
Another couple weeks and I'll pull mine out of hibernation. She's been in storage for ~2 years now. E30: [/quote] |
