You kind of can do both things. I've been using the Adam's "advanced ceramic spray" on my X3 this way. Shoot a bit on a pad, wipe it onto an area, give it 30 sec, then wipe it off with the 2 towels, one for the bulk then the other to finish. Spray away from the car so anything that misses the pad doesn't land on the car. Fold the towels to get 8 sections, and plan on 4 or 5 towels total. Good microfiber towels of course. I can do the X3 in about an hour. I like it over the polymer wax in that I don't have to come back later to finish the job, and I am fairly convinced it lasts longer.
