You're all spoilt in the US.....the 1M will be about A$110K in Oz. When you consider our Oz dollar is now the same value as your very naughty US dollar, you guys get a very good deal. Add to that I had to put down A$5000 as a deposit on one of only about 100 coming here to Australia.

I have never ordered a car before it has released
How does it work? you order it and put a deposit down?
are the deposits usually refundable because the true specs/production/pricing hasnt released yet?
Is this car only going to be available through order and for one MY?

Info is still fuzzy at this point, so sorry if the answers are a bit fuzzy but it's the best we have right now.

The order bank is open, but placing on order at this point doesn't mean you have an allocation yet. Allocations won't be given out until March. So from what I gather, your dealer has basically put in a request to BMW on your behalf for a car. A bit of an odd way of doing things but it's all we can do for now.

Whether the deposit is refundable or not is dependent on the dealer. Most have put down a refundable deposit, but I think a few on this list have put down a non-refundable deposit. Whether or not you're willing to put down a non-refundable deposit depends on how committed you are to buying the car. Obviously, if you're still on the fence and waiting for the final specs/price, you want to get it in writing that your deposit is fully refundable.

Rumor is that the car will be available primarily through orders, so at this point it's not expected that you'll see many of them sitting on the dealer lots, maybe 1 or 2 (probably to avoid the Z4M coupe fiasco).

The MY question is still an unknown at this point. Best guesses are either MY11 only, MY12 only, or MY11-12, but those are just speculative guesses.

How did you get your configuration put into the system since "official orders" are not being taken yet? My understanding is that dealers are only taking pre-orders because allocations haven't been determined yet.

Mine is in the system also. I have a vehicle inquiry report with my preliminary options. (hopefully I won't have to get both PKGS to have NAV ,bluetooth and ipod). Showing tourist reserved also (ED) with MUC as destination.

You are correct. They are only taking pre-orders and I have not been guaranteed one of the first cars. Nevertheless, the pre orders do go into the system and BMW has full visibility to them. See attached.

I placed a $1k deposit this week. I'm supposedly #1 allocation w/ dealer although I'm a little suspicious as to whether I'm truly #1. Should I insist on seeing a Vehicle Inquiry Report at this point?

At this point i'm going with alpine white but that could change.

That wouldn't prove anything. As I understand it, they could put in as many reports as they want. So they could show you a Vehicle Inquiry Report with your name and your car, and you could still be somewhere down the list.
