I just surrendered my 135i and have this part sitting in the garage from it and was just wondering if it was a straight swap with the 08 M3's or if it is indeed a different part. Do you have the installation instructions for an M3 Andy?

You don't want to do it on the E39, trust me! It is a good full day of labor. I did it on my M5 and was by far one of the most PITA projects I've done. Getting the switch is about 5% of what you need to do.
The US cars don't even have a bulb for the fogs, you either need to buy Euro tail lights, or open yours and modify them to add a bulb and housing. Then you need to run wires from the rear of the car all the way to the front (glove box area) to the light control module. And you are about halfway done. Then you need to run wires to the switch, BEHIND the dash board. I think by now you get an idea what this entails...

Rear foglight switch installed for 128i!
Thanks for these instructions! I did the job in less than an hour, and did not remove the vent cover or the lower panel. The switch has four clips than can be gently compressed with fingers or a screwdriver. The switch pops into the dash, and slides out via the side cover. I unplugged it once figuring out the connector, and plugged in the new front/rear switch. Started the car to test function, front and rear fogs illuminate when needed!
This was much easier than my E30 three series cars, where I had to wire the connector lead, solder in the bulb holders and fly to Germany to pick up the switch! (ok, was going skiing in Austria after the BMW factory visit...) |

Yes. When you remove the side panel for the dash there's 1 large hole, and 2 small ones. There are push tabs directly behind the small holes - you have to push these in to release the vent. But rather than go thru the small holes, reach thru the big one, and press them. Once you do that, you don't have to actually remove the vent, just pivot it up from the bottom a bit, and you'll be able to get to the screws beneath it.

Oh - there are better instructions elsewhere - can't recall where. First step is to pull up the moulding around the door opening, near the side of the dash. Then, just pull off the big rubbery side panel piece on the side of the dash. Then, you can reach in and press on those tabs. (You can just use your fingers to do that.) From there, you should be good to go.
You can just yank on the vent, instead, without removing the side panel/pressing the tabs, but it seems to me you risk damaging the vent if you do that. Oh, and IIRC, there are THREE torx screws in step 1 (on the first page here), not two.

I also saw a post by someone who said he reached up behind the dash without taking it apart, and popped the switch out, but you probably want to take it apart.

Great DIY!! Did this today and the switch like a champ and best of all, it took only about 15-20 minutes to complete.

a few steps to clarify
did this today and it indeed only took 15-20 minutes. but wanted to clarify that when Andy says "pull side panel out" or whatever his words were, that is what it means. I took my vent cover partially off to gain access to the switch torx screws, then was trying to pull the switch panel down and only after reading 2-3 times did it make sense to pull the side panel towards the driver door to pop the connectors out.
The second item is that the switch pushes into the dash to remove..not as i was originally trying to pull it out towards me to remove. Hope that helps and Andy...thanks for all you do for the DIYers. |

Great DIY. Thanks for sharing with the community. I still don't understand why the hell BMW NA would disable such a function on cars that already equip with them. Where did they learn that we never have fog or heavy rain or even snow.
Will I be able to buy a switch with rear fog light button from my local BMW dealer?(Canadian)
