I know I am beating a dead horse here but...
Should I be worried if they put 83 22 1 467 993 oil in the diff? I know that the only difference is that it doesn't have the +FM in it compared to the 583. Also are we sure that it came w/o the +FM in it from the factory (I know Dackelone is already thought to have confirmed this)? I have noticed diff noise, which I don't mind, I just want to make sure that I didn't start with +FM and now I don't have it, because that would be bad. Supposedly my dealer has the trans fluid which will get switched out tomorrow. We'll see what they say though.

MANUAL TRANNY FLUID
I don't know if this of any help, but in the process of calling dealers to see who had all the proper fluids for the 1200 mile service, one dealer said they don't understand the issue with lack of LT-5 availability. He said the dealers computers will always show its not in stock because the fluid is in a virtual warehouse (whatever that means) and is accessed via Excella (sp?). He said he had something like 9 drums of the stuff on hand. Dan |

i just came back from Patrick BMW in Schaumburn, IL. The part # for the engine oil is different but the description sounds like the right one. is the engine oil okay? never mind i just ran a search and found out it is the same oil.
They wouldn't change the transmission fluid for me. they said i would have to pay for it if i wanted it done which would cost me about $700 they said. Last edited by Acidblast; 01-05-2012 at 12:23 PM.. |

Do you mean on your 1st service, they put wrong engine oil and no diff oil in?

My dealership called this afternoon to say they received the LT-5, so the full break-in service is a go in the morning. One odd thing I forgot to mention was that the computer said it was due for an oil change at 1,000 miles. Did anyone elses computer do this?

It is not an odd thing; even the first oil change is "condition based"; so depending on how the car is driven and under what conditions the service indicator may come earlier. For example, in the first miles my car's computer was saying 2000km. for the service which was "normal", then when I put around 400km. mostly in the city traffic and short commute the computer said 1300km. for next service (which means go to service at 1700 km instead of 2000) etc.

U.S. LT-5 Availability Mystery Solved
I spoke to my service manager and asked what the deal was with LT-5 availability. He said LT-5 is readily available. The confusion is a result of BMWNA not stocking it in their warehouse, so their system always reports that they are out if it. Every time a dealership ordes LT-5 from BMWNA, BMWNA has to order it from the supplier which is considered their virtual warehouse. The supplier ships it directly to the dealership, so the dealership isn't able to track it in their system. Lead times may vary due to the dealership's location. I'm in Houston and it took 3-4 days for it to arrive.

I was under the impression that the run-in service reminder was based on time elapsed from manufacture date rather than mileage per se. There was a run-in service thread a while back where a bunch of guys had their oil change light come on with just a few hundred miles on the clock; the general consensus at that time was just to wait until ~1200 miles.

++1. This is my understanding too. The 1,200 mile service is based totally on TIME. 90 days from the day the car left the Leipzig factory floor. |

Agree with that; whatever the computer tells I decided to have the oil change at 2000km. or slightly earlier not much. The service due light might also come just because of an additional setup (like the 90 days after production Dackel was talking about which is not valid in my case because my car was produced in August and service due light still did not pop up). Since my dealer has no clue and I have to train them about everything about my 1M they wouldn't mind anyway

I have to disagree. It's been less than 90 days since my car left Leipzig (18-Oct) and my light came on over a week ago which disproved the 90 day theory. It'll be interesting to know how the 1,200 mile service is really calculated.

At my PCD, the CA advised my that my service light would come on soon, but to wait until 1200 miles for service. The reason he told me this was because my 1M sat in Spartanburg for a month before I picked it up.

Sweet! Sounds like everything else was uneventful as well. My dealer initially told me the tranny fluid change was gratis but I kind of knew they'd figure it out sooner or later. It ended up being just a little over $100 which was worth it in my book. I'm going to have to start hunting around for jacks and stands...
