For those of you that have discussed OBD port options on here, another member (possibly different forum, I forget) did something even better which prevented her broken into car from being stolen.
Think about it, how often do you really need to use your OBD port? Rather than get RFID devices or removing the port etc. Add one kill switch for the OBD port power line and another on one of the communication lines (needed by the OBD tools), and hide them anywhere you like. This way, if done right, you can have something completely reversible, and easy to switch on when you need to go into service or use the OBD port, yet have it hidden well enough that someone will not have the time to rip your car apart looking for a kill switch! Simple and smart! |

Sorry to hear about your car! This is becoming a more serious problem by the day. Can't believe BMW won't admit to it.
Frankly I am surprised YouTube allows these videos to stay up. Teaching people how to commit a crime I believe is against their TOS. |

You could install this yourself with minimal effort. If you are really concerned about modifying wires, as another member suggested, you could remove a pin and add this switch inbetween it. IMHO doing this requires limited technical knowledge and more common sense than anything else. Its fairly simple. |

BMW ASSIST
Hey guys, it was mentioned once before, but if OP got the 1M with BMW assist he should be able to call them and demand them to track the car and to send police to it right away... These thieves seem talented enough to possibly know to disable that or disconnect the battery or whatnot but it would still be worth the try... Kind of late for the suggestion but still... I'm so sad... I walk out to my 1M everyday and the poor guy who had it stolen is in my thoughts all the time. Hope justice is served!

Part one to my solution. Went to my dealer today and I have an appointment to move my OBD port/connector and replace with a dummy (dead) port. If thieves want to find my OBD port, it will surely set off the alarm!

I can't help myself but laugh at some of these suggestions. OBD port lock? Seriously? Those are pro car thieves we are dealing with, they will open that "lock" with a screw driver. If they are up to a level where they can clone a key fob in a matter of minutes, I am pretty sure they will deal with a lock much quicker.
We need some serious software tweaking on BMW's part to sort this out. A postbox type of lock won't save your OBD port from being accessed. |

You have to remember that they are trying to access the OBD port one handed through a small hole made in the window, and reaching in to feel down for the port cover and pluging in the coder. Not easy to bust a lock by feel and one handed.....? Any positive means of securing the OBD port is going to dramatically slow them down/frustrate them enough that they may move on to an easier target.

You guys expect bmw to do something about it, but the truth is theres millions of cars out there and they cant exactly reprogram every single car.
Best thing to do would be to ban these devices, if there was a big fine for people buying or selling these then i doubt it would be such a problem. |

57 seconds you get a descent look at the kids face. I would be like a kid in a candy store if I looked out my window and saw 4 guys jacking my M. The hardest decision at that point would be do is which gun do I want to kill these guys with and do I call the cops before or after they are gasping on their own blood. |

Sorry you have lost your 1M, it's tough watching this video. However, this video is now global, so I hope BMW do the right thing and recall their cars for an update to eradicate this issue.
If someone reading this is featured in this video, you will be ashamed of yourself one day. Unfortunately, you will always be known as a thief........ |

Does anyone know a BMW tech in the US who can answer a critical question for us:
For US cars, is the key fob security code available on the OBD port, or do you have to contact BMW? It is my understanding that anti-trust laws in Europe prevent manufacturers from doing this over there, but the same is not true in the US. I've seen a post by a VW tech claiming that they have to contact VWoA in order to get security codes.

1) BMW Assist / SOS / GPS tracking (2 others have suggested this without a reply)
2) What about an aftermarket hidden GPS tracking device with a backup battery? (Lojack) These should at least help locate the car after it's gone. Ideally prevention is better, but I think this is also very helpful to have if it works. Thoughts?? Last edited by e82n54; 07-25-2012 at 01:19 PM.. |
