Well there is also the problem that if you don't buy the car from the same dealer who services it then they wont always give you a loaner. Seeing as I live about 30 minutes away from the one and only dealer in my area a loaner is important to me. Otherwise I'll be stuck having to have someone drive a great distance to come pick me up or pay quite a large taxi bill to get home.

Even if you had to have someone come up with you to the dealership, give them $50 bucks and I'm sure they'd be fine with it. $50 is NOTHING when you're talking a savings of thousands for a different dealership.

What about $2,000? I saved more than that by switching to another dealership in Florida. quote] While I find it difficult to believe a dealer cut their profit margin on a one for you by well over 50%, enjoy your car. I hope you can get the kind of service on it that I've had from my dealer for years. Unfortunately, the dealers in my area weren't offering more than $200 off what I paid. Tom |

It is no surprise that Dealers find it advantageous to provide loaners to their Buyers when the car is serviced. Think about it...
The pricing, the quality & availability of parts, and the general level of competence available at your local BMW Dealer's service center are all controlled via standards by the national distributor (BMW NA) and are independent of your status as a 'purchaser' or 'visitor'. So how does a dealership earn the business of the geographic region it's been allocated? And especially so if they feel they 'own' that region's business and choose not to be competitive on purchase price? Their only option, aside from the Designer Coffees at the hospitality bar, is the Loaner. If you need a loaner (vs. a $40/day rental - Enterprise will pick up/drop off at your home), the dealer really does have a persuasive, attractive offer. If you negotiate on price when purchasing and consider some of the savings as 'payback' when it's time for service (which is what, 4 times in 50,000 miles?), the rental car doesn't sound all that expensive. Credit Card Down Payment Limit?
Can a dealer limit how much you charge on your credit card for your down payment? I plan on charging $20k on my credit card (I want the points) - are they allowed to limit the amount I charge (since they have to pay a percentage back to the CC company)? Thanks in advance!

i'd be amazed if they let you put 20k on a cc.
each dealership has their own rule, most will let u put about 5k from past experience... |

i reported my dealer to mastercard for not accepting anything over $5000.
by the rules of either visa or mastercard no merchant can make a minimum or maximum dollar amount for any transaction. they are fined if they do.

Depends on the dealership. I was able to put $6500 on my American Express but it appears I was lucky to get that much.

Why would you want to do that? You will be paying interest payments twice on the car, not to mention having the credit card payment and car apyment. Unless you are getting the points, then paying it of immediatley.

if you were to put a down payment on a cc and pay on it that'd be totally insane! i think most people that put their down on a cc turn around and pay it immediately. right now i have a capitalone card that gives 2% cash back, say i could (in my head!) put the entire 135 $45k on it that's 900$ cash back on the spot!

I would pay the cc bill off right away and it also lets me get the car a month and a half earlier. There would be six weeks between the date I charged the down payment and when the credit card bill comes due. I could still due it with $5k on the cc but it would be nice to get the cc benefits!

it's the finance dept of the dealership that sets the cc charge limit. the reason is that plenty of people charge as much as they can get away with and then try to declare bankruptcy.......
and i think it is a line of bs that visa & mc can penalize a merchant for what amount they can accept......... |

No, it is my understanding that it is a violation of Visa and MasterCard rules for a merchant to impose a minimum or maximum charge amount -- at least, it was as of the last time I worked in the credit card industry, about 10 years ago.

Did a bit of researching. Looks like the CC down payment is between 3-5k for virtually everyone. When the money for my car is in hand. I'm finding a dealership that will accept all 40k of it. 2% Cash back I think so!

for some reason though the max cc charge limit by dealers only applies to CAR SALES. when i paid for my dinan supercharger and labor etc...the bill came out to 25K and they took my cc no questions asked....so its not really the fee they have to pay on the cc bill that bothers the dealership it seems, its something else!
