A couple of things - list looks good, but don't forget about the other SULEV cars that use the N51 engine. I'd wager that the E9x 328i with the N51 is likely the most plentiful source out there right now. But if you're searching through www.car-part.com, it really doesn't matter - if you search for the correct 330i intake manifold, it will list the same part from 328i's, X5's, etc. It knows the part was used in multiple platforms, although to my knowledge you can't just search by part number. Of course, one still needs to do their homework with the wrecker, get pics, etc., if going the used route.

As far as the part numbers, the vent hose is not needed for our cars (or for 328i's doing this mod, for that matter). The screws you have listed are the ones that attach the DISA modules to the intake unit - if you're getting this thing used, the DISA modules should already be attached to the manifold (confirm with pics, of course). There is some hardware listed in Stig's OP that you'll need to bolt the intake to the block. And of course, it's a good idea to replace the gaskets with new parts. I'm replacing the throttle body seal ring on the same principle, but it's probably not strictly necessary (although currently $6.91 through Tischer, so not a big deal at all).

Braking generally leads to poor MPG as you coast less, so yes, I do.

I am very interested in doing this to my 128i. I have a line on a low mileage 330i manifold with the valves for about $400 shipped. I don't have the budget for the tune yet. My question is if you install the manifold without the tune (it would be done later) are there any gains? Will it hurt anything not having the ECU re-programmed?

Supposedly it is worth a few HP, though I didn't mess with it at all.

As far as I know it can't hurt the car.

ur good, i was tune less for 5 months.

The tune is refinement in HP curve and some more gains in TQ.

Were the gains decent without the tune? If they are it might be enough for me. I am also thinking about an Injen intake eventually more for the noise than for gains just like my exhaust.

See my thread up to 15hp and torque. intake help torque and makes exhaust quiet.

I wouldn't skip the software long term. Gains from stock to DISA are less than the gains from DISA to DISA+tune (with a good tune).

Can someone please elaborate as to what the differences are between the stock manifold and DISA manifold?

It isn't a legal mod for the class I am going to run the car in, but I'm gathering all there is to know for future plans.

It's just a intake manifold with 3 valves to control airflow for optimal efficiency and power. It's used on many BMW motors, in fact any of the n52 motors producing 260hp have the 3 stage(DISA) intake manifold. As far as if it were class legal, im not sure. they would never notice you have it, so you could get away with it if you wanted to.

Trying to get these freakin guys on carpart to answer a few simple questions with pictures is the biggest pain in the ass.

So, pulled the DISA units off of the intake manifold I got a while back (pictured previously in this thread). All in all, it looks to be in great shape. The inside of the runners look nice and clean, too. I'm starting to think maybe this engine did only have 5600 miles on it. Anyway, the only question I have is that I can't freely move the flaps on either of the DISA units - is that normal? I didn't want to force it too much, lest I break anything. Thoughts?

Makes sense.

The DISA units on these are electronically operated(unlike the M54 where they are pneumatic), so it is logical that the motor would be frozen without power. That thing looks spotlessly clean!

Very clean look at the shape of the rubber on the seal, mine was worse.

the flaps are stuck in open when Off, cant move. In e46 engines you want them not to wiggle by hand. So check it, mine were very taught made me think that applying force would brake it.

(The e46 design had flaws that make the flap come apart and send its metal pins into the engine...)

Yup, but there is an easy perma fix for it on the E46. Did it to my fiance's ZHP and it was very fast.

Kit, the problem is that the valve actually fragments over time, and if you don't notice, it eventually rips appart completely. The kit replaces the factory plastic unit with aluminum.
