As to the importance of the LSD on the ring: The e46 325 is the only car in our class, that is not allowed to run a LSD. There was a team in our class that spent close to 100k Euro in order to build an e46 to beat the e90s. Even though they surely had the most expensive car in the class and even though their drivers were really good, their e46 was never able to completely match the e90s. Following that car, you could see why. They simply could not carry the momentum through the corners before the long uphill stretches and that is a sure laptime killer on the Nordschleife.

An LSD brings a lot on the Ring that is clear. I did not expect so much as it really does by the way. An LSD made my car turn easier as well. Less understeer, more controllable oversteer which helps the car turn with the throttle. In the end it is much more fun as well |

Here's another one, this time from GM's V-series: 2004 Cadillac CTS-V - lap time = 8:19 (on the world's crappiest runflats (Goodyear F1s) and in the wet, supposedly) |

Those runflats do suck. I replaced my GY's with Bridgestone Pole Position RF's. They're alot better than the GY's. Quieter, better traction and longer wearing. |

Wow, you can't be serious.
Last time I checked the Vette did not have any back seats. Also, the fit and finish is not up to par. The Vette is very plasticky and the interior looks out dated and blah. A new base Vette also costs appx. $49K which is not cheap. On the other hand the 1M actually has back seats that can be used. The fit and finish as well as the interior is much better then Vettes. If going fast is the only thing then one can tie a rocket behind a card board box and you will go plenty fast. That is not to say that Vette is like a card board box. But rather that Vette is more of a pure sports car with no back seats vs 1M.

On a German Forum I read today that the 1M coupe runs a 08:08 on the Ring, only 3 seconds slower then a standard M3 (without competition package) Impressive

Alot of North American circuits such as Lime Rock, Summit Point, NJMP the 1M might be able to edge out the M3 in its stock form. It has more tq out of the corners and is 300lbs lighter which will allow you to go deeper in the braking zones. The M3 wont have long enough straights to use that higher HP, which would be negated anyways in the braking zones.

please note, the times I am referring are BMW internal times, the one you are mentioning is the time driven by HvS for Sport Auto using the M3 with cup+ tires, which is normally slower then the times the test drivers are driving.(logical) The normal M3 seems to have an internal ring time of 08:05, so only 3 seconds faster then the 1M. Of course, a M3 with competition package is faster:-) Last edited by marcel b; 01-27-2011 at 01:01 PM.. |

Well, you can forget all that. The new car is fitted with a turbocharged straight six. Turbocharging? In an M car? That’s like putting gravy on an ice cream. - Jeremy Clarkson, discussing the S65 and then S55 M3 engines. |
