Great thread. I purchased a used 1M with 2850 miles on it this past weekend and the car is being transported via GT-MS. I obtained the service records (basically just the 1200 mile service) from the previous owner and it appears the ONLY fluid that was changed at the time was the engine oil. The diff fluid was on back order per the invoice. So now when the car gets here in approx 1 week I plan on taking it to my local BMW dealership to have the diff and tranny fluid changed. I am hoping the dealer here will do it without a hitch. Any thoughts on this matter?

as long as the dealer who changed the oil at 1,200 miles did not get paid for the service... you should be good. Otherwise you might have to pay out of pocket. But since you have the original invoice... I think your chances are high they will cover the cost of the service. Let us know how it goes. |

Made the appointment today and it appears the diff fluid will be changed under the maintenance plan thank goodness. Does not appear the tranny fluid change is part of the regular service according to the service rep. Seems some people have gotten it changed and some have not. So what is it supposed to be?

PM sent. You may not be able to get it covered if the break-in service was performed by Advantage.

Hello community... does this draft email cover it?
Hi <dealername>, I have booked the 1M in for the first service at 9:30am on Saturday and wanted to flag my concern that the 1M community is finding that almost all dealers are getting the fluids wrong on the 1200 mile 1M service. The main point of issue seems to be putting the wrong differential oil (sometimes using the M3 oil) or in some cases not doing the differential oil at all. Here is a link to this subject on the most visited thread on the 1M forum (the main forum for all 1M owners). Below is a summary of what should happen. Only other thing to say is that I am only at 900miles. Please confirm both of the following please: a) You have the correct fluids in stock and are able to carry out the complete service on Saturday, including the correct differential oil (part 83 22 2 282 583) b) It is okay to complete the 1st service at just over 900 miles, rather than wait for 1200 miles to be on the clock. Here is a summary of what needs to be covered in the 1st service: 1. With the engine oil, you just have to make sure they use 5W-30 synthetic - 07 51 0 017 866. It's the standard N54 oil. They could screw it up by putting M3 10W-60 in it because it's an "M" car. I haven't heard of anywhere putting on the wrong filter. 2. With the differential oil, the correct part number is 83 22 2 282 583. This part number refers to the SAF-XJ with friction modifier. Historically, the M cars only got (+)FM fluid if there were complaints about diff noise, but Service Bulletin 330211 makes it pretty clear that 1Ms get the (+)FM fluid. According to Dackelone's sources, the car came filled with non-FM fluid, for whatever reason. It's important to keep in mind that once the diff gets (+)FM fluid, you should not go back to non-FM fluid. 3. Manual transmission fluid for 1Ms in North America doesn't get changed until the 3rd oil change. This in contrast to 1Ms in every other country in the world. The fluid is backordered nationwide. The correct fluid is MTF-LT-5. The correct part number is83 22 2 239 655 which is the 20L size. The MTF-LT-5 (not LT-2, not LT-4) is referenced in a BMW Canada service bulletin # 000110, which should fall under the BMW NA umbrella. See post #21 at http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=593513. Interestingly, this specification was omitted from the equivalent USA bulletin according to other forum members which has led to some problems convincing some dealerships that MTF-LT-5 is the correct fluid. |

Be careful the engine oil for the 1M is different in the UK, it is 0W-30 LL4 here, whereas in US is LL1

BMW (actually)has three grades of full synthetic oils that can be used in the N54/N55 motors: 0w30, 0w40, and 5w30. LL4 is for EU(low sulfur fuels) and LL1 is for USA(high sulfur fuels). Here is a good place to buy BMW oils at discounted prices... http://www.oeldepot24.de/catalog/ind...cPath=22_35_27 |

Just had a successful 1200 mile service, oil service and diff service completed with the proper fluids. My transmission fluid wasn't replaced [they quoted about $300 to do it] but my SA said that BMW NA specifically told him that it's unnecessary due to the additional run-in that NA vehicles have at the factory. I don't necessarily believe it, but he cites SIB "00 01 10" as the source on the paperwork.
I did get a complimentary scratch on my rear bumper, as well as two miles on the clock and a huge amount of burnt fuel... looks like somebody took my car for a WOT joyride before I did. I'm not convinced that there are any good dealers for any type of car... ever. |

I have decided that I'm going to skip the "free" maintenance that BMW provides as part of the purchase of the car and do all the maintenance myself. I'm starting to learn the good old saying "If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself"...

so i called up the service manager at Patrick BMW and told him that my transmission fluid was not changed and he said bring it in and they will do it. I brought my car in yesterday afternoon and within an hour or so they had my transmission fluid changed free of charge. thanks to the service manager for making it right.

However, there are 2 potential issues with the idea of skipping the free maintenance: 1. Obviously if you want a part/service to be free (covered under warranty), the dealer has to be the one changing the part or doing the service. Usually not a big deal on oil changes and the like, but it is on big $ items like brakes and other expensive components. 2. BMW can potentially deny warranty work because you decided to opt out of the free services they were providing. However, hopefully, keeping a record of purchasing BMW oil/filters/etc. is sufficient to prove that you kept up with the maintenance despite not taking the car in.

I'm setting up my 1200 mile service for this Saturday and I really appreciate all the informative comments made here on this thread. I confirmed with my local Monterey BMW that only engine oil/filter and diff fluids are to be changed. FYI, the MTF-LT-5 tranny fluid is still backordered and not due for release until Feb and that this fluid will be changed at the 3rd service, or at
approximately 30,000 miles. I was a bit surprised that my next service won't be due until roughly 15,000 miles was what they told me. So all this "5 yrs/50,000 mile free service" is going to work out to be about 3-4 fluid changes. I'm not complaining, was just expecting a smaller interval between services. |
