I just used a flathead screwdriver. Worked just fine. An angle tool would have been easier, but if you cant find one then a flathead would work.

hooray, new grill
thanks for the DIY! i had actually made my own tool out of a hanger and was planning to get this done straight after work. drove by a sears instead and found a kit of right angle tools (after speaking on the phone with an idiot who told me they didn't have any). so it was 7:15pm, sun was down already, no flashlight... and i decided to try this out just in case the right angle tools didn't work and i had to exchange them. it was a pain to see in the dark and took me like 20 min or so just to get the first grill out. hardest thing was actually figuring out which tool to use (had 4 in the kit), and once I got one clip out the rest were easy. and yes, God bless the learning curve.. the second grill took under 2 minutes. BMW performance black kidney grills look AMAZING. i hated them in pictures and decided to risk it anyway, COMPLETELY worth it. looks completely different in person, so much better. My 1er is so much more aggressive now. iPhone pic of my dirty car attached |

super easy install! thanks for the write up! I was able to just release the three top clips and a little tug and they both popped out free and clear, one side was more stubborn than the other and just used a small flathead to release one of the bottom clips on the left side... such an easy mod... should just come standard as part of the shadowline trim package... then everyone would be buying and swapping in the chrome ones.... lol

Thanks for the DIY! Worked great using a coat hanger. I'd just make 2 mods to your instructions:
- Because it's easier to get to the top tabs, I released those first, and pulled the top of the grills out a bit. That put pressure on the bottom tabs, so they popped right off when I pressed them with the coat hanger. - When removing the rubber stripping, just remove the ends, not the center (the part attached to the bumper. That makes it easier to re-install. Reinstalling that was the hardest part of the job (tho, granted, not very hard), only cause that rubber stuff is rough on your fingers. I'm loving the matte black grilles on my SGM. I'd post pics, but someone has already done that for SGM.

Matte Black Grilles Installed
Thanks for the DIY, it was very helpful. With the black roof and grilles, the appearance of my car is taking on a new feel...and I love it. Posted several shots with the OEM grilles, then the matte black ones. Once I get the iCarbon hood, lip and trunk lid on, it'll be looking hot!

I just did mine.
here is an easier way. 1) remove the 4 torx screws 2) lift the top of the bumper so you can peep into the top three tabs 3) Use a screw driver to push the tabs so they will unclip from the bumper 4) make sure you hold onto the grille so they do not pop back in 5) grip the grille with both hands and pull out the grille. done. |

EDIT: Nevermind - removal of the torx screws at the top is required. I should have looked before bothering to post.
«« ORIGINAL POST »» I received my Shadowline grilles and looking at the tab placement, I'm wondering if it should be possible to remove the stock grille upper clips by reaching in through the slats? That would save unscrewing the bumper skin, but I haven't see any comments on that method in this thread. Does the bumper skin block access to the upper tabs from the front? Cheers, Bryan Last edited by BBursey; 01-22-2011 at 11:27 AM.. |

I am requesting that if anyone out there has done this to post a pic. I have not done this yet. Was thinking about it and wanted to see how it looked.
