Plus I've done so much to the car since buying it a few months ago that I think I'm just gonna chill and enjoy it. I've put in a 3 stage manifold, headers, 3.73 final drive, Bilstein B14 kit, the fucking evaporator, spoiler, shift knob and some other maintenance stuff just this summer. Feels like a whole new car but I'm getting sick of spending every Saturday in the shop lol. |

![]() ![]() The adapter for the multi-pin system connector is of a reasonable enough size that you can tuck it into the cable management after connecting. ![]() The remote coding session with Bimmer-tech went more-or-less without a hitch (there was an issue where the SOS call system was still throwing an error code, but a follow-up session with Patryk addressed that). Note that the Combox did arrive with the latest 1008 firmware. ![]() For USB SSD drive connectivity, I used a 3.5' USB Type-A female to USB universal (green) BMW/Mini 4-pin connector from eBay plugged into the USB1 (black) 4-pin connector and routed the cable underneath the trunk liner to the left taillight connector cover. You can see the sticky zip-tie mounts in the photo below running the cable off to the left-hand side, where it tucks underneath the left trunk cover. ![]() I'm probably going to reroute the pink Fakra connector that's next to the 6FL USB connection as it's rather an awkward routing and I'm a little concerned about stress on the connection. Depending on how far back I go into the wiring loom, I might just remove the SOS Call System Fakra cables altogether (if I can find where they terminate - hopefully not a homerun back to the head unit) and rewrap the wiring loom with the sticky fabric tape that we all know and love. ![]() I used a surplus 512GB NVMe 2230 drive from a Microsoft Surface Pro 8 formatted as a 120GB FAT32 MBR partition (IMPORTANT - you can't use ExFAT-formatted and/or GPT-partitioned drives) in a USB thumb case that's velcroed to the trunk liner. Music needs to be in MP3 format, although BMW doesn't seem to care what the bitrate is. Not sure I'd want to go too much larger in partition size as it does take a bit when you first start the car for the audio system to index the drive. ![]() However, I did notice that the partition that sits between the under-trunk-liner cubby and the battery well has an interesting-looking module slot that can be snapped into place. I'm going to see if I can't do a little tinkering with off-the-shelf NVMe to USB adapter boards, an NVMe drive heatsink, and a 3D-printed or CAD/CAM aluminum mounting bracket that can snap into this spot as it would protect the drive a bit more, would look a little more OEM+, and would (hopefully) keep the drive itself a bit cooler since these suckers can get a bit toasty. I'll keep y'all posted if this works out. ![]() End result - I can now stream music two different Bluetooth connections (phone or otherwise) or I can take advantage of the ~ 9000 songs I have on the USB SSD to choose my poison while driving. The little swirly circle next to the time in the iDrive screen is the system indexing. The USB drive is definitely faster than the onboard 4200RPM HDD that comes with the iDrive system (even though it is 10x the capacity with 10x the number of songs). The updated Combox software even allows for music metadata such as album cover, which gives everything a more modern look. ![]() Highly recommended if you have the budget.

After chasing “TPMS INACTIVE” error for a werk or so was able to find the culprit thanks to CARLY reader. “Well sort off “
Just like the most obvious first step was to check and inflate tires all good there. Cleared cod but it would come back on righ away. So did some research and before going any further into expensive parts, check my RDC module for mosture as its very well known for water intrusion in our trunk. Module was just bit díscolor but nothing like the water intrusion I found on my go pasive module which I had to replace. Anyways checked, dried with a hair dryer just in case. Plugged back in no change. Error was still present. Even though Cary app was pointing me to the “Whel electronics rear left but really was not clear what was it exactly. Went to a Discount Tire near my work checked on all the sensors witj thier wireless devide. ALL SENSORS CHECKED GOOD. The technician which I immediately sensed he wasn’t fully knowledgeable on this RDC system but still gave it the benefit of the doubt. 🤔 Did a little more research amd going to the realoem site. Idid see the wording about a “Wheel Electronics” referring to a sensor in the diagram and thats when it clicked in my mind. Its gotta be a sensor. I also found a post saying that even if the sesnsors read good at the tire shop that may no be the case. Went back to Discount Tire next day I asked how muc for a new sensor installed and was $82. Bit the bullet and tada it was the bad sensor RL causing the error message. The technician was able to reset TPMS in my iDruve and just a few blocks down the road the message was gone. I hope this helps someone out there. Cheers 🍻 |

Very easy to fix TPMS. Code it to the proper system and throw that USDM trash where it belongs.

Started off driving the car to a golf course in Anaheim. Played well. And drove home through Carbon Canyon blaring CSN, Young, David Gates and Glen Campbell, James Taylor, OASIS acoustic this and that. Fun stuff.
If I’m cruising with music, the button is fine, traction control off. Runs fine with the A/C on (sport button + TC delete is the only thing I can get close to stabilizing RPMs.. and stop lurching and crapping out completely in heavy hot freeway traffic). When I want to paddle shift, that’s a different drive than this afternoon. So that’s what I did to my car today—I had some car love with it. |

I took my father across to Wolfe Island from Kingston on the new electric ferry (one of the first in North America).
On the drive back to Toronto I checked out a few new back roads (new to me) - lots of curves and virtually empty on a weekday (sorry, no photos this time - it was so much fun I didn't want to stop!) My To-Do List for the car is growing, but that can wait until the weather turns bad - for now I'm having too much fun just driving it! Last edited by parameter416; 09-03-2024 at 09:20 PM.. |

500km Drive to Move to Ottawa
334,000+ KM on the odo. Full car packed with everything for school. Stayed at a nice hotel for a few nights before my apartment was ready.
Did the entire drive on 1 tank of gas, with a quarter left on the gauge. Car never skipped a beat! |

It's less impressive if I tell you the electric ferry was delivered about three years ago and it's been sitting at the dock ever since, waiting for the charging infrastructure to be built. It finally went into service only about two weeks ago, on a reduced schedule until they complete the fast charging.
So many delays, I'd swear Metrolinx had a hand in it. Last edited by parameter416; 09-05-2024 at 05:34 PM.. |
