Gave in and bought Bimmergeeks Protool. Was able to calibrate my ABS/DSC module to clear the 5DD0/5DD2 codes doing that. 2 codes left and then the christmas tree will be removed from the dashboard. Also used protool to disable the TPMS system.

The BST code and the code A670 for the condensation sensor behind the mirror. I ordered a new sensor for the the mirror. Also I flipping hated installing bulbs into these headlights. Jesus. So I just put all new bulbs in while I had the cover off to not have to worry for a while.

Trying to figure out its normal coolant temps running around. Cuz Im not sure why my car is having an issue cooling itself now. The fan is working, I feel water being circulated when holding a hose so I think the pump is too. But this bitch just wants to sit around 205-215f. Its been 70-75f on a warm day and mostly 50-60 this past week. EDIT: Appears to be normal after some more searching/learning. Frick thats a little warm to me but I guess its normal BMW. I seen 230 but I took off on the highway and it dropped back to 205.

After some searching and learning, someone's done a trans tune on my GM auto. Protool was saying my trans ecu was for an X3. Which is mentioned in threads I found. Explains why the car feels quick for being stock. Its pretty quick for stock. Not alot of other 1er's around me to see if its just me not used to the car or if its the car's previous owners doing mods too. Someone did do the little aluminum cooling flange thing that looks like mickey mouse

Went to charge the battery this morning since I haven't driven her in a while - tax season and other matters. Decided to top up air in the tires and to do a quick wash first which led to cleaning the interior down as it was getting dusty. Then after all that, I hit it with some Autoglym Super Resin Polish and finished with Ceramic spray. Finally put the battery charger on at 5PM... :-)

So what to day. I love it. N55 with DCT is just match made in heaven. Since I have zero muscle memory for this car, driving of needed careful feathering of the throttle as it could be a bit jerky.

Wonder if the stainless steel 'iS' pedal is going to change that or not.

Then there's the active steering. Very interesting. Again, no muscle memory, but I knew what to expect. First impression is a definite positive.
Transitions is what I need to learn, but once I get to drive this daily, it should become very natural.
Roundabouts hardly take any steering input.

Now one more hoop to jump to (pay import tax) and then waiting for my papers so I can have plates pressed.

How does she compare to the old school E36?

It feels like a modern version. Maybe even more like a modern E30, but I have never driven one.

The E36 does feel more like putting on a glove. I still daily my 328i that I bought in May 2006. Every switch and button is just within arm's length, while on the E88, it's all a bit more distant. Specially the light switch.

E36 is smaller in that sense. While wheelbase and overall length are smaller. Funny how the E8x is old tech, but coming from an E36 it feels so modern. And I don't have a feeling I am missing out on stuff.
Only thing I would have liked is a blind spot monitoring system, specially with the huge c style on the convertible.

Then again the same applies to my E36 and I never had a problem there, even with the tiny M mirrors.

E36 does feel more connected, but my Active Steering won't help in that regard. And my E36 (both 328 and M3) have an LSD, which make a big difference.

Excellent.. Active steering in the E88 must be interesting - it is still hydraulic, correct? So maybe not too much loss on the feel vs electronic.

My old E36 was built like a tank - seemed sturdier in ride and build quality although my memory is going back 25 years.

Also, to me the seating position on the 1 sits a bit high compared to other BMWs I've had.

Definitely interesting for sure. Only have done 100km with it on my single trip to our 'DMV' so still need to learn it. Car is back in storage now as I don't have plates for it yet.

But yes, still hydraulic. Active Steering always comes with hydraulic PS. But the extra plenatary gearbox between you and the rack makes it less.

Seating position is definitely higher. Electric seats will only add to it.

How would you take this Etorx bolt out? Was going to replace OFH gaskets and saw this bolt behind the intake, last person who touched it completely damaged and rounded it. Already tried hammer a socket on with no luck.

Weld a sacrificial nut or socket to it and turn. Or see if the old gator grip socket would get it out.

Got a 2DCE valvetronic code today. I hope this doesn’t mean what I think it means.

YIKES

That's aluminum, right? My initial thought was that vice grips should be able to bite into the material well, but even if you get a good grip on it, it looks like that head may just shear off.

I guess if that happens you'll be down to using an ez out...if you can get a drill bit in there.

could you not dremel a slit in it and turn it out with a flat screw driver?

Use an extractor like Irwin Bolt Grip. Alternatively you could try to trim the outer "washer" part of the bolt head against the block to then use a standard crescent wrench or vice grips.

Sounds normal to me. The electric water pump and thermostat do a good job of keeping it hot for lean burn/emissions. Then you start ripping on the car and it drops temps immediately. You can also bleed the cooling system electronically FYI, if you need to. Use the fancy BMW coolant.

I also come from working on simpler cars from simpler times, but understand what you signed up for here.

Nice job with what you've done so far, sounds like she's coming along. Hope you find the driving experience as rewarding as I do. Juice is 100% worth the squeeze IMO.

Yo, worst case, cut it off. I assume you're replacing the OFHG anyways, so you're gonna have new bolts on hand. If you're not, well, you are now lol. You'll also want to pick up 1/4 drive swivel e-torx socket.

Once the housing is off, it should be easy to access the shank and twist it out.

Stupid TTY fasteners.

Try resetting the valvetronic motor maybe?

It wasn't too hard on my n51. Just followed FCP's video when I was doing my valve cover. You might also want to have an extra gasket and a 1/4" drive e-torx socket on hand for doing this.

Oh, also remove the CDV. No one has ever regretted it. Clutch feel for days!

I’ve changed it before, that’s what makes
Me not want to do it haha. But after driving the car for a bit I haven’t seen the code again. But let’s see how long that lasts.

Hopefully the valvetronic is an easy fix. My N55 135i had the eccentric shaft frozen in place. Even with my low miles and diligent LL-01 oil changes.

New Z4 first "mod" was removing the CDV Yes totally worth it.

I LOL'd at coming form an era of simpler cars, same here!

Honestly, given how jerky it was trying to get moving from a stop with the CDV in place, I thought I was just unable to learn the car. Relief to find out there's nothing wrong with my brain-leg connection.

I wouldn’t say the valvetronic is easy but it also isn’t difficult either. Just tedious and you have to be careful when removing the motor itself because the eccentric shaft is spring loaded and can really hurt you if you don’t have a good handle on it. I would say that’s the most dangerous part of the entire job.

Noticed that my 1 still had 2 open recalls on it. Figured its worth a shot to call and get it in to be fixed. Local dealer is going to fix those, along with a complimentary vehicle inspection.

They'll do an oil change while they have it too, which i'll pay for.
