Did the infamous water pump and thermostat replacement. Out of pure reluctance to spend nearly $1,000 CAD, I went to the junkyard near me after seeing they had a crashed 128i. The stars aligned the entire front clip of the car was gone, and the water pump and thermostat were fully exposed. Both were stamped 2023 and branded with BMW, so someone clearly cared enough to have this specific one installed at the dealer. Good enough for me.
$36 later, I had a near-new thermostat and pump. Did the install, not as bad as I thought. Honestly, it would’ve been much faster to just remove the bumper and front beam for straight-on access. Spent like 4 hours on my back cutting up my hands in between all the lines. |

I am not making fun of this mustang but it looks very silly. Not to mention that this Lamborghini was right across from it in the same parking lot to make matters even worse I got caught taking the photo of the mustang and saying where is the airport. lol

Oof those rear flares. Doesn't appear to have done cutting of the actual fenders underneath from the photo showing the front. So purely cosmetic, but also clearly not cosmetic either...
Watch out he's running boostane and has a trunk mounted wing. Serious business.

Well... kills the value? or just a much better deal?
My 08 128 with sport package, manual sport seats, and sport steering wheel, had only 32k miles on it when I picked it up less than two years ago. Maintenance records from dealer day 1 with oil changed every year regardless of miles. It's a beauty. And I'd have probably paid a $5k premium had it been stick shift. Back in the day I only bought manuals as they came with extra gear vs available auto. A 4sp Mustang I took my drivers license test in would have had a 3 sp auto. The 5.0 Fox body I bought new had a 5 sp stick vs 4 sp auto. Last manual I purchased was twenty years ago in '05, a G35 6MT. Sweet car. I guess the 6 sp GM autobox on my 128i maybe weights 50 or so lbs more than a manual? But it's far more versatile than the stick shift. I get it if someone wants to drive a stick shift and enjoys the novelty of it, or I suppose wants to track it, thats great. I've motorcycles for that. Redlining an inline 4 at 16k rpm they shift sweetly. See the same thing with 3rd gen 4Runners... pay one helluva premium for a stick shift. Me? Mine? Auto. Anyhoo... 45k mile on the little car we call junior now, it's completely stock other than tires, and its in garage for summer while I drive our '09 E92 with sport package, only 25k miles, and? Yep, same 6sp auto. I love N52 BMW coupes. And couldn't for a minute wrap my head around paying a helluva premium for a stick shift. Cheers |

Finally found the local 135i with the M-perf muffler. He got his the same year I got mine.
He actually waited to see who the owner was of the blue 128i was and we had a nice chat. He has 150k+ miles on his 135i with only a waterpump that failed. Very cool day today since we have had a few highway cat and mouse games since buying our 1ers.

Well, I felt a little ambitious this morning and decided to tackle removing the chassis harness from the car. Below is 40lbs of chassis harness, not including the door wiring and the big power cable under the car. Removed all the connectors needed for the MaxxECU and/or chassis harness (DBW, Brake Switch, Taillights, Fuel pump, Wiper motor).

New Coco Mats for Little Red (2011 128i). Made the mistake three years ago of cheaping out and getting knockoff coco mats, not the original/real Coco Mats. They were thinner, lighter and much more roughly woven than the real Coco Mats (which I already had in my E91). Also, they wore out in only 3+ years - wore through right where my left heel rests. The seven-year old real Coco Mats in my E91 have worn so much better and are still in great shape (except that the black fibers have faded to purplish dark gray).

I left the 1 back home to take a trip back to my second home in socal.
Got a chance to putt around in my brother in law’s new X5. Kind of surprised by the potency of the B58 in a rig of this size. We took it up the mountains and it definitely (and expectedly) handled them very well. His supercharged E39 M5 sitting in the garage. I can’t wait to take this out. |
