I de-armrest-ed my 128i. I have the old armrest if you want to scavenge it for parts.

It looks huge because half the engine is already under a large cover (interior filter) so not much left.
Show it fixed underneath the hood and it's not so big anymore.

No coolant leaks overnight... So far so good. Fingers crossed it was the bastard hose or a loose connection.
On to fixing the swaybar mounts, rust proofing, and painting my sunroof delete panel. Also got new wheelspeed sensors. They keep dying. What sound were you trying to eliminate?

No it's big enough. I just mean on for example my E36, there is no huge cover inside the engine bay itself, like the 1 has the huge panel (cabin filter) that covers like the two rear cilinders. So the insulation, only covers the exposed engine section.
On my E36, there are no covers, so the whole engine bay/engine is exposed and so the hood insulation, covers the whole inside of the hood, so it covers the complete engine. I might pick one up just to see. Engine sound as-is, is pretty nice.

There was absolutely nothing broken about that end of the hose or the hose clamp, I assure you. I wrestled with it and my knipex pliers for at least a half hour. BASTARD HOSE.
It's my fault though. The turbos are huge and making direct contact with the hose. Next revision of these things are positioned slightly higher to avoid issues like this. The water pump end of the hose had heat stress cracks which looked like it was through and through on examination, likely hidden by the hose clamp and the coolant either leaking from that, or the turbo coolant line somewhat above. Time will tell here. Still nothing leaking and I just spent 3h with a drill and wire brush attachments blasting rust off the front half of the car underneath and not a single drip. Front half of car is now ready for a layer of underbody coating.

At the time I bought the first one, I really bought it to insulate the hood from engine heat thinking it would save the paint a little wear and tear. At this point, especially since I ditched the engine cover, it helps with valve clatter.

Ah valve clatter. My duet with injector tick. In symphony with the smokers cough exhaust burble and to the pace of wastegate and gear rattle.

Attachment 3821183I bought the OEM engine cover a few years ago because at the time OEM parts were becoming scarce (esp. BMWP parts) so I wanted to pick up a few things before they disappeared completely.
I can't say that I notice much difference in engine noise from the engine cover, but I installed the Euro OEM airbox to get more intake noise, so for me it's a good thing that the engine cover turned out to be not very effective lol. |

Loving all the posts for maintenance!
Been picking my kids up from school in the 1er, which I have to say is usually the only two door car in a sea of SUV’s. They ask if I drove the blue race car

Does look a little less utilitarian.

Had some free time this weekend and went down a bit of a rabbit hole on paint correction, so I figured I’d finally give polishing a shot. The car’s paint was in “okay” shape, but I hadn’t washed it in almost a year after it got hit-and-run’d, so it was looking rough.
I’d never tried polishing before because I was worried about leaving buffer trails, especially on black paint. BMW clear is on the harder side so that never happened. I wish I had done this the day I bought it, the difference is night and day. Even with just a foam pad at medium speed and Meguiar’s yellow polish, I was seeing unreal results. Way better than I expected for a first try. |
