2 for 1 Techron
Just worth noting...
I was at my local Advance Auto the other day and they have Techron fuel injector cleaner on sale buy one get one free (both small and large sized). I think the sale runs through end of the month or so.

Also, on a phone, you don’t see signatures or profiles, just the post. Without that context this seemed to be general Techron chat (not model specific). |

Techron was actually developed with input from BMW in the 1990s, from what I understand. BMW sells fuel system cleaner, but it's identical to Techron, including the bottle sans labeling.
Technron and other proven fuel system cleaners are probably not required as much these days when using top tier gasoline, but I don't see any harm either. I've been buying the cases from Costco forever, and have a habit of using them in all of my cars from time to time. It's probably not doing much in a modern direct injector engine like the N54 or N55, but it doesn't hurt to keep a bottle in the trunk on long trips for when you might find yourself having to use off-brand fuel. |

I use it every few thousand miles.
I think it makes at least a small difference in that the engine runs a bit smoother at idle and under acceleration. But maybe its all in my head. I generally use name-brand 93 octane gas. I have 54k miles and have never done a walnut blast.

What about carbon build-up on piston heads?
Saw a study done a few years ago that evaluated the effect of cleaners on carbon on the top of pistons. Isn't this an issue, direct injection or not? That said, the study showed minimal effect from occasional use of any cleaner. Always using Top Tier gas is the only proven preventative to carbon build-up.

Another issue with this forum
I'm told that titles of posts are also missing when viewed on phones. I once got a snarky response from a poster because I answered his question in the title, he could not see it, and assumed I was dissing his post.

Techron, Redline's FI cleaner and others I can't recall contain PEA (polyether amine). PEA is somewhat special as other detergent additives can cause a buildup of the detergent itself over time.
Also there's some evidence that the big slug of Techron (dumping in a whole bottle) is not as effective as using a little all the time or using Chevron or Texaco gasoline. I haven't been able to find out what does of PEA is in the gasolines. Techron additive is 30% - 60% by weight according to an MSDS I found. If I can't find or don't want to pay the extra for Chevron, I'll drop about a fourth a bottle of Techron along with a fuel up.

Emailed My BMW service advisor, who I have trusted for many years and asked about using Chevron with Techron, and she said:

I wouldn't turn away from any other additive that contains PEA if Techron isn't available. Includes Redline S-1, Gumout and Amsoil. She probably can't say that because I'm sure BMW and Chevron have a deal.

At least we know they recommend Techron for direct injection engines.

Yep and for what it's worth the discussion on Bob's The Oil Guy agrees.

FWIW, back in the good old M20/M30 days, the standard procedure among the enthusiast crowd was to run the tank down to about 1/8 full, dump in two 20oz bottles of Techron, and proceed to flog the car ruthlessly for ~30 miles, then change the oil. I can confirm that this had pronounced positive effects on my old 533i.
While I suspect anything this drastic is unlikely to be necessary with something as modern as the N5x engines, there are certainly deposits in the fuel system after years of use. Anything the cleans them out will be helpful, even if it doesn't produce discernible effects.
