Went to my local dealer here in SA and he said for R15 000 they can't upgrade the software on the 135 to be the same as the 1M. So it would (or should) be around $2 200 |

Curious about this. Never heard of a BMW authorized/installed flash that offers the over boost feature for N54/N55's. Bet its just another case of dealer not knowing what the hell hes talking about.

We have dynoed an n54 135 6mt Active Flash (Low Boost map), afe intake,Dp, straight pipe exhaust, intercooler, 228 Whp.
Not really apples and oranges since the boost was much lower. I would really Love to own an 1M |

It was running low boost 13 or so. The owner tracks the car and at the time of the dyno it was coding up on the track. Damn N54's over heat like crazy!!! Since then we have installed two huge oil coolers with custom duct's. Its now running around 15 with out any problems.
Its funny the n55 same track setup has no issues on the track with heat and stock oil coolers. |

Windman: Possibly... But why would you not just use a new tune that comes with the tuning reflash product you bought, that is even more than the 1M tune? Why use the exact 1M tune at all? May partly be that tuning products don't want to just be copying and pasting tunes from "different" factory cars, but also probably they can do better with their own tunes.
I don't believe overboost requires special hardware to at least function at some level (whether its a good idea without the extra cooling upgrades is arguable). My understanding is there is no extra switch or mode or anything. Assuming the physical ECU in the 1M is the same as a 135i, which seems very likely, I would bet it is possible to flash the 1M ECU ROM right overtop a 135i ECU and the ECU wouldn't really know your car was only a 135i anymore. I could be wrong, but again with the above assumptions, it would actually be hard for BMW to stop people from doing this in a comprehensive way. However at this time there are no "open" ECU reflashes that let people read and write whole system images to do things like this. Cobb obfuscates the ROM and I don't believe will allow you to flash a 1M or "135is" file onto a normal 135i. Other reflash vendors require mail-in to reflash. My educated guess would be that these reflash vendors could probably release a 1M-style ROM for 135i cars with the overboost stuff active if they were so inclined. There's not much to say on this until one of the vendors chimes in. You can try to lobby for it if you want. HPTuner, OpenECU community (Subaru), and Cobb have made actual code changes to factory ROMs before, adding things like speed-density fueling (for factory MAF cars), flat-foot shifting (2step rev limit when clutch depressed), anti-lag, etc. The sky is the limit here, but it is a lot of hard work to write in code into something you only have machine-code level access to. I do not understand the importance over trying to get a 1M tune on a 135i when there are plenty of tunes available out there. I also am in the camp that there is no really big reason a 135i couldn't make the same power when tuned as a 1M. If AC Shnitzer decides to give their 1M tunes more boost, that is just a tuning decision, again the cooling differences may be valid to some extent.

Hardware wise both the 1M and 135i N54 are the same, but for some reason BMW decided to add a couple different parameters to the ECU/DME on the 1M. If you download ATR for Cobb and Download the Maps for the 1M DME and a regular DME maps like IKBOS VS IKBOS 1M, and compare some parameters you'll see that the 1M maps have more parameters. I believe they did this for a smoother tune at a slightly higher boost level. It is also the reason you can't flash a 1M map over a 135i DME.

What is this talk of a cool down after using the overboost? Will your car need a rez if you lose a drag race or something :P
Isn't overboost always set to ON when you have a JB4??? I call my overboost function all the time on my 2008 N54 FBO... it's called my right foot!!! hehehe (Yells at KITT, "...MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, N54 coming thru...") I think the only difference is the exclusive number of cars produced with that "official" badge which make it more expensive... everything else you can do yourself with a CPO 135 n54 and retrofit all the M3 bits over + FBO goodies + lots of extra money in the bank saved. Limited edition = Marketing folks way to extract more money from tag whores/suckers. |

The difference is they most likely didn't just up the boost in the N54 to make more power, they most likely actually adjusted valves and other aspecs a slight bit to bring it up in power.
