Has anyone added heated seats?
Hi everyone. I bought my 1 used and it doesn't have heated seats. I saw bmw makes a retrofit ( http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...75&hg=52&fg=95 ). I'm wondering if anyone has attempted it or has looked into it at all? I don't have sport seats.
Also, does anyone know what the part number is for the seat heater switch on the dashboard is? thanks for any help |

i couldnt help but notice that you live in California. do you really need heated seats? I wouldnt mess with it. youre going to do more damage pulling your seats apart to put in the retrofit.
mine do work great though, lol.

I know I don't NEED heated seats, but it is nice to have a toasty bum on the drives back from Tahoe after a days skiing. I heard somewhere that the seats already have the heaters in them and you just have to connect it all up. anyone taken apart the seats and can comment?

Contrary to popular belief some parts of CA can get VERY cold, even here in sunny SoCal. There have been plenty of mornings when I go outside with ice on my car. I know... that's nothing compared to you guys in the mid-west and back east, but for US that's COLD.
Heated seats are great to have. I've never had heated seats in any of my cars because I never felt a need... that is until I borrowed my bros Suburban for a couple of weeks. Damn those heated seats were nice on those chilly mornings. I'll be ordering my 1'er with heated seats, that's for sure. OP - I haven't heard of the elements already in the seats, that would be really nice. I don't see why they would do that as I think it's those elements that would make up most of the cost of the heated seat option. I could be wrong though. Good luck! |

We're in SoFL, & ordered the car with Heated Seats. It allows you to cruise at night in 65 degree weather in the winter season with the top down.

+ 1 for heated seats. This is my 1st car with heated seats and I love cruising with the sunroof open/windows open with the seats keeping me warm. Also, great to have on cold mornings.

OP, maybe go ask a dealer what comes in the kit. Maybe they can print out those directions in ASAP ( Aftersales Assistance Portal ).
I think the kit must be only the carbon heating pad, that comes in the kit. The parts pic only shows that! It says the dash switches are extra. I also wonder why the kit if not for power seats nor for sport seats. BMW makes the car that way with heated seats... so why not offer the retrofit kit for those cars too? ??? RealOEM says... not suitable for leather equipment Important notice: The installation instructions are not included in the retrofit kit. Print out the latest update of the instructions from the Aftersales Assistance Portal (ASAP) and hand them over to the customer. For vehicles with Sports seat = No S481A=No For vehicles with El. front seat adjustment w. memory = No Switching centre (centre console) to be ordered separately! For part number see electronic parts catalogue (EPC). S459A=No 01 INSTALLING SET HEATED SEAT FRONT |

Wanted to bump this for a second round, maybe get some new viewers.
I'm shopping for a used 135i and living in MN I've been somewhat avoiding cars without the factory heated seats. I know that they can be added, I have done that in the past, but in my experience it's just not nearly as effective. If this retrofit works like the OEM's (which I have sampled on a 128i and they were veeerrrry nice) I'd love to know mroe about it if anyone has had the work done or has an inside scoop on it. Cost? installation difficulty? |

I have had heated seats in my last three BMWs and they have been great. The 128 seats are the best ever, the heat goes up into your spine a little.
That said, the seats have alot of electronics, and I think, air bags, so trying to retrofit seat heating elements seems to be pretty difficult. I would say the nest bet is to find a wrecked car and purchase the seats and console switches from it. I am guessing, but I suspect the seat heating feature would need to be coded as well. I asked one of the factory reps in Munich about changing out seating and upholstery, and he said it can get very expensive. He figured if one wanted a very specific interior, that it would be cheaper to order a new car, built exactly the way one wanted it and sell the existing car. I see his point, the BMW Performance seats cost 1500 euros each, and sadly, don't work on US cars. |

Once you go heated seats, you can never go back.
I'm not sure which is compatible with what, but there seem to be a fair number of OEM BMW seats w/ heat available on eBay. |

If you dont have heated seats, and you acquire OEM heated seats, will the seats just plug right in? And how hard is it to installed the switches? Is the car all pre-wired for it?

My understanding is that you will need to add the heated seat buttons to the center panel (they are available on ebay for around $30-100 with trim). The heated seat buttons have a connector that goes to the back of the A/C panel. Picture attached shows this. Wiring: No additional wiring will be required if you are switching Power Seats->Power Seats or Manual->Manual. If you would like to go from manual to power, there may be wiring needed from the car to the seat. Here is a Diy for that. and Coding: You will also need to code the VO $494 for the heated to function. There may be additional coding if you went manual->power seats or no lumbar -> lumbar. Hope this helps. My seats arrived today. I'm going from Power standard without lumbar to red power sport seats with lumbar. I will try to give an update over the weekend when I have them installed and coded.
