Question about M-Performance carbon fiber

I had a knockoff carbon fiber rear lip and after about 6 months the very thin layer of clear coat was cracking and peeling.

Does anyone have the genuine M-Performance rear lip? What is the quality of the clear coat? I'm going to order the genuine lip, but I'm trying to decide if I need to spray several layers of clear coat on it first.

8 1/2 years on and it still looks great.

Edit: Oops, should read "almost 7 years". The first one was replaced under warranty because the dealer did a sh*tty job of installing it.

Nice! I won't be too worried about it then. Thanks!

they hold up well, mine looks new
Install is a pita though - you really get one chance to place it correctly, and there is nothing to help you place it correctly. I used painter's tape and flipped it upside down towards front of car on trunk lid, place clear double sided 3M tape, then flipped it back slowly and prayed it was placed properly. 2 people help unless you have an 8 foot wingspan

Part of the reason I'm going with a genuine lip is because the knockoff wasn't a perfect fit. The ends weren't flat and really needed a good clamping to stick down. The 3M tape eventually gave up on the sides.

I'm using Betalink this time. It should allow me to move it slightly as I clamp it down. As long as I clean up any excess right away it should be fine and probably easier.

Betalink is the only way I'd go... if I was going to do that.

The oem one is very high quality and perfect fitment. I added mine to my Cabrio about 7 years ago as well. I would not use beta link for a few reasons. I did use 3ms highest quality and bonding tape. I put a double layer on the front edge to ensure that I could apply enough pressure to bond and not have the edge touch the paint. I cleaned all surfaces thoroughly with IPA and heated with a hairdryer. I test fit and used blue painter tape to make guides. Lastly I secured it with tape until the next morning. I’ve had no problems and looks as secure and good as the day I installed it. Good luck.

I came home today to find a 6' x 2.5' package at my door that weighed about 2 pounds. I'm sure the driver was curious why such a huge box seemed empty.

My previous lip was not some crappy eBay special (or so I thought). It was an AutoTecknic that set me back nearly $300. I don't know why I didn't just buy an OEM lip then.

The OEM absolutely blows the AT out of the water for quality of weave, clear coat, and most importantly, fitment. The fit on this is absolutely perfect. Installation will be a snap because there's really no guesswork involved. It butts up against the trunk and follows the curve perfectly. I'm sure I could get away with using tape on this wing, but I already have the Betalink and I don't ever plan to remove it. If the clear coat does ever fail, I'll just tape off the entire trunk and respray the lip in place.

Don't be an idiot. Spend the extra money and get the OEM rear lip.
