Is this a really good mod that is worth while to do?

Very tempted but there are a bit too many issues with the conversion.

1) Windshield washers / cutting of covers
2) pollen sensor too short
3) cable tie for cables
4) cutting rubber seal

Any more??

4. Didn't have to cut a rubber seal.
5. Add spacer to hood for hood latch sensor.

Went into it thinking it was a straight bolt on until I closed the hood.
I enjoy working on the car and I plan on keeping it for a long time so for me
it was worth it. Just wish I'd known in advance what I was getting into.

Thanks for all the info!

Sounds like too much trouble for me cos I won't be keeping it for more than 3 years.

I have finally had more time to work on this thing. Taking a very long time but it is good to get some experience with filler and paint.

I had some plastic enclosure boxes that I cut up and epoxied (JB Weld) onto the cowls. I then sanded until it was roughly flat and then filled with body filler. Sanded, filled and then primed so I could see any imperfections. Wet sanded then primed again and here is the result.

Still has some small imperfections but it would probably take another entire days worth of work to make it perfect. Tomorrow I will prime the entire part and then do the coats of matte black.

It will all be worth it as I work on the car a lot. Taking off the microfilter every time I want to do anything is real draining, even with power tools.

Looks good, a seemingly small project that takes a lot of time.

Just throwing an idea out there. If you heated up the plastic in the area directly under washer nozzle and depressed it a little, wouldn't that be enough to provide clearance? Just a thought.

Painted!

The finish isn't 100%, I might touch up some parts. For some reason I can see some spotting in the plastic bits I added. Not sure what the cause is. Might wet sand and give another coat.

And installed! Need to add the cable tidying clip. I also do not have the covers for the DSC pump and ECU box. I think adding these covers will reduce the extra noise introduced by this mod. You get some nice turbo noise but it also introduces a tiny amount the clicking noises coming from the injectors which isn't particularly pleasant.

Also need to make an extension for the sensor that clips into the microfilter cowl. Will probably opt for buying a set of male and female connectors so I can make an extension cord rather than cutting and splicing.

I did mine a couple years ago. Like everyone here, I thought it was perfect until I tried to clean my windshield and it shot clear over the car.

Originally I melted and modified the covers but wasn't satisfied, so I did trials with different washer nozzles. I tried 5 series, older 3 series, eBay, and eventually found mini ones that's work.

I'll try to find the part number, but basically they are Mini Cooper washer nozzles and come heated or non heated. I had to splice BMW connectors on for the heating and then get some hose adapters to fit the different size washer hose attachment. The hose parts can be found at a regular auto store. The final product is pretty clean and looks stock. The spray pattern is a little different, but I've gotten used to it and it works fine. You can actually adjust where the nozzles point.

It's easier than a pro looking cover mod, which takes a lot more effort, skill, and time.

Could you take a gander at RealOEM.com? I work at a dealership and can get the part numbers if you can't, but maybe you know the specific body it came from?

When I say mini...they are literally from a mini. A mini cooper to be specific. I got them from ECS, and I believe it was PN 61662756194 for the one side. You can look on the site to fine the other. I bought a BMW heated nozzle and spliced a connector on for the heated connection. Hope that helps.

I got the pieces in today (ordered about 10 left, and 10 right), and put the BMW connector on the Mini nozzle and it fits, closes and operates perfectly.

for comparison:

By far the best solution, this makes it much simpler. Thanks for post

I used the HPA one... but I'm pretty sure other people have used the OEM M3 one as well.

OEM m3 works for sure on e9x, but for e8x HPA had to modify it

You bet. They will require adjustment of the swivel nozzles though, because the spray pattern is really awkward for our cars out of the box. You can do it with a paperclip or a toothpick though.

When splicing in the Mini Cooper ones. Does it matter which wire is which? And if so, how can you tell. One of the BMW ones is marked with red line, but both Mini wires are black.

Look at the connectors on both. If you look carefully, you'll see a "1" and a "2" indicating the pin numbering. Just wire it up to the corresponding pin and you will be fine. Technically, I think it's a simple circuit, so it really shouldn't matter, but I can't confirm that.
