I am making a list of things to replace while the motor will be out. My son will be in California in college, so I am trying to make it reliable while he is away.
So far I have this list. Valve cover gasket kit Oil filter housing gasket Oil cooler gasket Oil cooler - old one is contaminated for sure and I am not taking chances. Water pump - 80k miles on this one, on my 535i it died at 60k, so I think I will replace it. Spark Plugs Thermostat housing Power Steering Cap Gasket Transmission filter + fluid Anything else I am missing? Radiator is newish, looks recently replaced. Day 1.
Got a lot of work done. Forgot how many stupid coolant hoses there are, its like a damn rats nest. Took like 20 minutes to disconnect 2 of the main radiator "quick" disconnects. Got the entire front clip taken apart. Still deciding If I want to pull the motor with transmission attached or try to fight the stupid upper bolts. Here is the new motor. From a 2010 528i. Looks pretty clean, zero sludge. Few minor differences. New to remove the oil cooler and swap the engine mount brackets. Should have the motor out tomorrow. |

While you are doing all this work do your self a favor and pop in some Rear Subframe Bushing Inserts or 2 piece bushings. It vastly improves the handling.
By the way if you wanted some used Msport shocks & springs I've got a set sitting in a box & I've been trying to decide what to do with them. I've been meaning to post them up in the classifieds for cheap but haven't gotten around to it. 55k Miles or so on them

Anyone know if I can bolt the N52 for a few days using not aluminum bolts to an engine stand? I know corrosion is the reason for aluminum bolts, but would it be ok for a few days? or is it going to leave some deposits and bite me later?

Started working on the train wreck that was the interior. Like a gallon of coke spilled everywhere. None of the buttons worked, all stuck together. Had to take it all apart.
Carpet almost clean. Before. Work in progress. Also cleaned the engine bay. |

I firmly believe that the best way to clean an interior is to rip it out, attack it piece by piece, and reinstall. Did you pull the carpets? Pressure washing them will do wonders.

nah, just the seats. We used a steam cleaner and carpet cleaner and got it 95% clean. Too much effort to remove the entire carpet.

Great project! I don't think the 128 has an oil cooler, does it? If you can get the lines to line up (ha) I'd leave the water to oil heat exchanger right where it is.

You are correct, I was thinking of the transmission cooler. I will replace the gasket there as well since it will probably leak.

I think you'd be surprised at just how easy it is in these cars. I mean you have all the hard things out already. It's just unbolting the accelerator peddle and popping off the trim. Then there is a plastic nut at the top of the footwell on either side, IIRC. The other thing I think you'll really want to do is Ozone the car. One of those leave in the car overnight units. They are amazing at killing any residual smells, mold and mildew. |

Looks like a fun project!
You can retrofit that water-oil heat exchanger into the 128i (it wasn't stock, only on the 5'er and X cars), it helps everything warm up faster in winter, and keeps it cooler in summer. You need the coolant pipe that goes into the block, and a hose that goes across the front of the engine. I was gonna say do a single mass flywheel conversion...but it's an auto:

Got some 261m wheels from a local member. Make the car look much better vs the stock crappy 17's.
Got the motor installed today. Replaced all the gaskets first. New Valvecover gasket set. New Plugs, all new o-rings for the water pipes. Like 20 aluminum bolts lol. Inside of the motor is super clean. Very happy with it. Motor in! |
