Need inspiration!
Hello all, so I am a fellow e90 member but am currently looking at the 1 series because I love the look of them. I was just wondering your guys input since you are 1 series people and I am only familiar with e90 3 series. Currently, I'm looking at 08 128i. I test drove one and it felt amazing compared to my 06 325i. The exhaust was actually there as I stepped on the gas and the handling was so much more sportier. All around I loved it! Now my question is, is it worth it? Specs are, I currently own a 06 325i with 96k miles and this 08 128i has 36k miles. No warranty so it'd have to be 3rd party but my main concern is have there been any major problems with the 1 series? Like I know about all the issues with 335 recalls and that's what I'm concerned about considering I know nothing about the 1 series. Thank you for your help and sorry for the essay :-/

A 128i is very similar to a 328i mechanically. Haven't heard of anything major with them.

Most of the issues are to do with the same N54 engine that's in the 135i and the 335i. N52 engines in the 125i and 325i seem pretty solid as far as I know.
Recalls for non engine related issues in our E82/88's are mainly related to the rear tail lights. I'm assuming that the car you are looking at is a pre-LCI model as it's already out of warranty. The pre-LCI tail light has issues with the LED tubes going out and the third brake light has issues with cracking. Both were issues replaceable under warranty so the car your looking at may already have had that done. Apart from those I can't think of anything else on the top of my head. Edit: I forgot to say, good luck with your purchase

The 128 is a great car. I've had a few issues, but mostly all under warranty. You'll enjoy it. Check out the 128 engine section on this board, that is where most of the 128 owners hang out.

My parents have an 08 cabriolet 128i with auto-tragic transmission. Funny thing about it though is that there is nothing tragic about it at all. Very solid and fun car.
Which is probably why I got a '12 coupe with manual because of its fun factor and reliability! GL!

I've owned an E46 sedan, 128i cabrio and E91 wagon. The only downsides to the 128i is a lack of rear seat space, a smaller trunk and somewhat poorer Navi implementation (at least on the earler models).
My wife & I have taken long trips (up to 8,000) miles in the 128i and it handles very well, is quite comfortable and averages 29~30 mpg on the highway. Tom |

I bought my '09 128i back in June and just went out of warranty at the end of October. When I bought the car, it had 32 000 km on it and carfax showed only 3 scheduled services done. Since June, I've had the two rear tail lights fail and noticed tiny crack in the 3rd brake light (which I'm sure was probably there when I bought it but hadn't noticed). All replaced under warranty. I also noticed some intermittent squeaking in cold weather from the front suspension - replaced front sway bar bushings with "updated design" part. Otherwise, no issues. Based on what I've read in both the 3 series and 1 series forums about the solid reliablility of the N52 engine I decided not to purchase an extended warranty. Very happy so far at 45 000 km on the odometer . |

haha thats funny cause i just made that jump about a month ago! Absolutely loved my e90 325i. Cosmetically it looked awesome, but i jumped into an e82 135i and never looked back. It was great, not as many mods exterior wise but i love it. Hope you make the jump too! Let me know if i can help out at all.
