You are likely due for plugs as well.

This.
Replace coil from cylinder 1 with 6 and if error moves to 1 you replace it (which is much easier)

Don't be concerned, I can pretty much guarantee coils are your issue. I had the EXACT same thing happen on the '13 128 I picked up back in August and it only had 36k miles on it. Same thing happened to my previous '12 128. Skipped under modest acceleration. On my '13, someone had already tried to address the issue because there was 1 delphi and the rest were bosch. I read where it was a no no to mix coils brands.

I'd bet good money that's why the '13 128 I bought was traded in at the car lot I bought if from, they just didn't want to mess with a car any more when they probably thought it was transmission related in the way it skips. When I drove the car it had that same stumble, but I gambled and bought it and replaced the coils. No issues since...

Order a good set of Delphi's, not the bosch and you'll be golden.

In regard to plugs and your car being a 128 and low miles, I'd skip the plugs for now, not really needed, but since you're in there, might not be a bad move to go ahead and replace them.

I agree

At 60k, mine started misfiring and I replaced the plugs, and swapped coils to the cylinder that was misfiring and it was fine after that. Coils are crazy expensive but don't throw away money right? Diagnose it first then fix what's wrong.

I'd do plugs. You'll save time or money depending if you're going to diy or pay. I've also heard on here that fresher plugs prolong coil life.

If it were me, I'd do all of them and be done with it. Why replace just one coil and possibly face the issue again.

Don't replace any coils - swap them and see if the misfire follows the coil. If it does, you need a new coil. And if you need one, you may as well replace them all because they are all of similar vintage/mileage/condition.

but the issue is only present under heavy load. cannot replicate symptoms in driveway. I've tried. I would have to drive her and make her misfire before I could do the swap coil thing. that's how I got the p0306 code. drove her a little hard to trip the ses, then ran the code. as soon as I turn the car off and back on its gone. she idles fine and drives fine as long as I don't get to throttle happy.

You don't have to reassemble the whole engine bay to test drive it. The plastic cover with the BMW logo serves no purpose (mine is in my attic), and you can run the car without the cabin air filter piece that spans the engine bay. You have to remove all these pieces to change the plugs/coils anyway. So this diagnosis takes about 30 seconds to swap coils + a test drive and could save you whatever coils cost. At least $100 last time I checked.

Check if you have the 15years/150,000miles warranty for PZEV/SULEV in your state. In California we have it and coils part of emission the dealer does for free.

First run the VIN in a decoder and see if you even have a SULEV engine. It will be N51 not N52. By Htown I assume you're in Houston so even if you have an N51 I'd be surprised if SULEV coverage applies.

I have a SULEV (N51) car in Texas. Can confirm that dealers won't honor the extended warranty here. My understanding is BMWNA only honors the warranty if the car is registered in a state that originally sold the SULEV car (Cali, NY, NJ, Pennsylvania, maybe a couple of others).

2. Long-Term Emission Control Defects Warranty (California Emission Control System Limited Warranty)
Specific emission-related components are covered under the California Emission Control Warranty for defects in
materials or workmanship for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
Only high cost emission control components are covered by this warranty. The cost threshold is determined by
the California Air Resource Board (CARB).
A complete list of the covered components for specific models is located in the specific vehicle’s Service and
Warranty Booklet or in this section of the manual.
3. Long-Term Emission Control Defects Warranty – Models Certified to Optional Standards

The California Air Resource Board (CARB), to address “fleet average” emissions, allows manufacturers to pursue
an optional additional certification for specific models. This extends the Long-Term Emission Control Defects
Warranty.
Specific emission-related components are covered under the optional additional certification for defects in
materials or workmanship for a period of 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
A list of the covered components for specific models is located in the vehicle’s Service and Warranty Booklet.

Determining California Emission Control System Limited Warranties Coverage
To determine if a vehicle is eligible for the California Emission Control System Limited Warranties coverage,
the following three items must be taken into consideration:
• Model year of the vehicle
• Current state where the vehicle is registered
• Original state where vehicle was retailed (only for vehicles prior to 2011 model year)
The California Emission Control System Limited Warranties was originally established in California, hence
the name, by the California Air Resource Board (CARB). Over time, several other states have adopted all or
some of the California statutes; therefore, eligible vehicles of these other states are entitled to all or some
portion of this warranty.
Model Year
Although a vehicle’s emission coverage “start time” is based on the retail date, the Model Year is a major
factor for determining the specific emission warranty coverage.
When a vehicle is sold, it is sold with the specific warranty coverage as outlined in the Service and Warranty
Booklet. The coverage varies, based on the Model Year of the vehicle.
Vehicle Registration and Original Retail State
The California Emission Control System Limited Warranty applies to a vehicle that is registered in a CARB
compliant state. BMW vehicles not initially retailed, leased or currently registered in one of these “CARB
compliant states” are not eligible for this coverage.
The California Emission Control System Limited Warranty applies to a vehicle that is registered in a CARB
compliant state, regardless of the original retail state, when the model year applies.
Emission Coverage - 2011 Model Year and Newer BMW Vehicles
The statement in the Service and Warranty Booklet is:
The California Emission Control System Limited Warranty applies to all [applicable model year] U.S.-
specification BMW [models] registered in [specific states - list].
Emission Coverage - BMW Vehicles up to and including 2010 Model Year
The statement in the Service and Warranty Booklet is:
The California Emission Control System Limited Warranty applies to all [applicable model year] U.S.-
specification BMW vehicles sold, leased, and/or registered in [specific states - list].
