Possible Engine Diagnosis?
Fellas, truned the 1er on this morning, the idle ran up to 1500 rpm and the car was shaking, the manual tranny sick was shaking. Then the "Service Engine soon" light popped on. It dropped to 1200, then stayed steady at 1k rpm. I popped the hood, the engine itself was shaking. I turned it off and on a few times, same problem. I took it around the block and it didnt sound good at all. Sounded like i was driving a 90's diesel engined car.
Possible diagnosis? I tried hooking up my odb2 scanner, but keep getting a link error. Is it safe to drive? Info, 2011 128i 6 speed, build date of August 2010, only have 21k miles. All normal BMW service has been done, by the dealer. |

No. I would have the car towed to prevent any further damage to the engine.

it would be easy for me to diagnose, by switching the coils but I just dont have the time. I started a new job last week, and with a kid, getting the car to the dealer is going to be a nightmare. Well getting the loaner will.

Sure, you can swap the coil and track the code. But then BMW is just going to do the same in order to guarantee the part that is required. PS - When I blew a coil on my Z4M it was almost instantly on startup as well...for what it is worth |

Dealer replaced the coil and spark plug for Cylinder 5, no charge. Weird because I am in CPO warranty and I thought there was a $50 deductable?
Also, BMW road side assistance was great, i called the number, scheduled a time for them to tow my car to the dealer, no issues, no charge. Sometimes it pays to pay more. |
