Those without runflats, show me your spare tire.

I'm due for new tires and I've decided to go with non-runflats. I did this in my MINI years ago and had the ignorance/confidence to drive everywhere without a spare tire.
Not so much now, I'm going to get an OEM doughnut spare. I'm wondering from those that have one, how do you carry it in the trunk? There's nowhere to secure it down to keep it from bouncing around.

Fits right next to the battery under the tray in the trunk.

I use a steel wheel from a e46 330ic. Its 7j x17 steely with 47ET(I think?). I know it fits perfectly and the wheel only costs me 60 euros. I run a 205/50HR17 summer tire from Barum(Conti's sister company). You need a 17 inch wheel to clear the 135i's brakes.

I use to carry the euro(only) 335i alloy spare tire. Its a 3.5j x17 wheel with a donut on it. I had to use it once in the rain and I swore NEVER again. Thats when I upgraded to a full size wheel.

Google "M3 SPARE KIT1" (BavAuto). Is that not *the* kit? Personally, I carry a good compressor and plug kit, that will get you through most (not all) emergencies (and for the rest, I have Progressive Road Side).

I'd take a picture of mine, but it's late. I have a spare tire (donut) with a jack inside of it in my trunk. I use a Velcro tire wrap to keep it all together and 2 tie down straps to hold it down. The straps attach to the rigid metal loops in the trunk and 2 hooks I installed myself. There's a DIY on here somewhere explaining how to install those hooks. I then have a net over top of it all to keep loose things held down. This is way better than the slime stuff. I hear it's a real mess to clean off of a wheel.

There is no place real good place to secure the tire in the trunk. But unless you're going to be doing some Dukes of Hazzard stuff or tearing up some corners, there really is no need for it to be secured.

I also have AAA but I got it mostly for my daughters. The older one has a new car now but the youngest is still driving a Toyota Corolla with about 250K miles. Even with a new car and a spare tire, they may or may not be able to change it. The older one probably can but the younger one is pretty tiny and her jack takes a bit of force.

I carry a Viair 70p compressor and a ARB Orange Speedy plugging kit. I don't carry the case of the plugging kit, I pulled the pieces from it and put them into the compressor bag. It all fits neatly in the little recess in the passengers side of the trunk (drivers side has a bottle of oil in the BMW bag). Here's a link to the Viair:

http://www.amazon.com/Viair-00073-He...ords=viair+70p

I've been driving over 40 years and I've never had a flat that a compressor wouldn't have allowed me to limp home with except for one old dry rotted boat trailer tire. And in that case, I could have dropped the trailer and gotten home. I figure the plugging kit adds a little additional margin. And then there is AAA if that fails. I don't want to loose most of the trunk to a spare tire.

Interesting, I've never had a "tire incident" that could be addressed with fix-a-flat and/or a compressor. They've all been a "total loss".

I have only needed a spare tire twice. And both times, having one did not help. First time was when I came outside one morning and my car was sitting on four blocks. Next time, I was driving cross country up to Northern Alberta. Hit a pot hole, a biggun, took out three rims and tires. Just kept driving the last hour.

A LOT of cars come new these days WITHOUT a spare, and WITHOUT runflats. Not a big deal.

I do carry the OE compressor/goop kit though.

16 years with my E36 and I never used the spare. Plugs and a compressor at least three times that I can remember, most recent in '05-ish (and that one was very close to the sidewall... I got home alright, but ultimately had to replace the tire). Only one highway blow-out in my life, early 90s with what I think was my G60 Corrado (and then I used my spare, that was the last time).

I think about the kit BavAuto sells, but I'm not sure I have room to *spare* (HA, get it?), trunk is full of beach stuff I will not travel without.

Same here. I have that and a plug kit so I dont get stuck.

The only time I needed a spare was when I had a sidewall blowout on the highway. My spare then was my father grabbing one of my winter wheels and bringing it to me.

If I ever need help in the real world I have AAA

Just realize that slime will destroy your TPMS sensors...should you need to use it.

Those of us with Canadian 1ers do not need to worry about this as our cars do not have TPMS sensors.
