6spd manual n55 weird idle problem? sigh
I have been searching forever to find answer to this problem.
Searched every forum post regarding this problem and was not able to find the definitive answer for the longest time. I am sure many 135i with N55 suffers from this same problem. Here is detailed description of problem... 1. Whenever I come to stop or slow down the car ex. approaching a stoplight, my rpm drops slightly below normal range and car intermittently shakes. (drops down to about 400-500 rpm) If I can catch it fast enough I can rev it up and it idles normal. 2. Sometimes engine literally dies. It happens quite rarely. Same situation, slowing down for stop and rpm drops down, but fails to recover and just dies quietly. 3. Rpm surges usually after aforementioned situation. It will drop to below idle range and spike up. Hovers around 1k rpm for little and settles down. Numerous posts were written on this forum regarding this issue but none of them were able to find the solution. I tried every suggested solutions from old posts but none of them were able to get rid of issue. 1. Cleaned MAF sensor, problem persists 2. Checked DME version thru MHD tuner and confirmed it was up to date 3. Reset adaptations thru MHD tuner but problem still persisted 4. Replaced with stock air filter but problem was still there 5. Replaced spark plug 3k miles ago, battery is replaced last summer. Recently I decided to fill up my car completely since gas was cheap and surprisingly, it somewhat helped with the erratic idle problem (RPM still surges occasionally but doesn't drop below idle). This leads me to believe its fuel related? Other than this, car pulls strong and runs flawlessly. I know there are so many people with same problem here. I want to know what you guys think about this and possibly find solution together lol. |

Are you running a MHD tune currently? Is your N55 a late model 2012 - 2013? If so this is a known problem with MHD's tune currently. They are aware and working on testing a new map. Contact them via email they are awesome with support and may even send a test map.

Mine is as of their latest update. I removed the tune and issues were resolved. There are a couple of other threads floating around here with the same issues.

Same issue no tune
Hey guys,
so I have that exact same issue with idle when coming to a stop and is exasperated when my gas tank is low on fuel...leading me to the same conclusion that it could be fuel related. It stalled today out today (in neutral and foot off the clutch) which has only happened once before but I think its because I was low on fuel (about 47 mls in the tank); usually it just drops to 400-500rpm and takes a second to jump back up to normal idle rpm. Otherwise the motor feels perfect, I don't have a tune though so it can't be the tune for me, any ideas what it could be? Thanks! |

I had similar issues with my setup (N55, FMIC, VRSF CLDP, MHD S1+) I just raised the idle to 750 (which leaves it at about 600rpm). So far no more idle issues. Waiting on Carbon Cleaning to see if it helps.

Vacuum leak or intake seal issues post MAF(or MAP?)? Youre N55 so you should have a HPFP sensor and low pressure sensor so you should be able to rule that out(or in) if its fuel related. You can get a cheap WIFI/Bluetooth dongle and a free app to connect to your car and view it live to confirm fuel theory.
I ran an BMS intake for awhile and it cuz'd weird idle issues as well. I'm just trying to make a first post so I can send a PM, hopefully its helpful but probably not. good luck |
