I used surplus expanded aluminum available from the local metals supplier for a few bucks. It is stiff enough to hold its shape yet soft enough to form easily. Since it was already black, all that was needed was a quick wash and scrub with a brush to get the dirt off, then work it. I repainted at the end to make it look sharp.

That's actually the stuff I was going to use initially but I wanted something flat and more unique. Everyone around here uses that on their bumpers.

I purchased some of this mesh from Allen and it's very nice stuff. He ships quickly and it is packaged nicely, not to mention a great guy to deal with!

Can you let me know what type of adhesive you used to attach the mesh to the back of the diffuser?
Thanks.

I would guess a good Epoxy would hold well.

Glad I saw this thread. I just ordered a new OEM replacement rear diffuser from Dan at United BMW so I could paint it gloss black. I also did not order the insert since you have to purchase it separately. Now I can order some mesh and install that before I have it painted.

The insert is item #13 on the diagram in this link http://www.trademotion.com/parts/200...iagram=1980800
I just ordered item #12 and not the #13 insert. Of course the numbers shown on the diagram are different than the order numbers. They are off by one number. The diffuser is item #11 in the listing rather than #12 and the insert is #12 rather than #13.

Just finished my rear diffuser project. I even painted the rear diffuser gloss black. I couldn't wait to order another rear diffuser, I was going to have it professionaly painted gloss black to match the trim, I guess we'll see how long this one lasts.

Ditto on paint. Did you just spray it up with some gloss no prep?

Thanks guys, yeah I rattle canned it! I used that Krylon for plastic no prep required. I think it came out great, no runs at all.

You wont believe it but I found this extremly light weight gutter mesh stuff. It's some sort of bendable plastic material. The whole project cost less that $20.00!

Not sure why BMW decided to close this piece up with a black piece of plastic? In my opinion they should have left it open and installed mesh from the factory. It just looks better!
