Spacers and tire width question

Never liked how the wheels are a bit indented into the wheel well and don't cover it up fully. Have a set of 10mm on my Audi, and used 30mm on my M5 as I was running the rear wheels up front (275s all around). Would love to put on some thin spacers (say H&R) to have the tires align with the fender wall.

What's the optimal setup for this car on stock rims - 10/20mm? I fear anything more may introduce vibrations, tramlining, undue stress on suspension components, rotational weight, rooster-tailing during wet driving, and diminishing returns as far as handling (I'll likely need longer lug bolts too).

Speaking of rims, what is the widest combo people have run on the stock rims (is 235 front/265 rear possible with a slightly smaller profile)? And aftermarket rims? The latest EC magazine has a tuner running 255s on front and 265s on back on aftermarket (18" I believe) rims. I feel the Bangle era BMWs just cry for wider tires given the bulges, creases, and flame surface designs...

Typically you would run a 19x8.5 ET40-45 front and 19x9.5 ET45 rear. I am running a similar setup with my Vorsteiner wheels on my 135 with 235/35/19 and 265/30/19 tires. It did require fender rolling to prevent rubbing but I am also lowered heavily on KW V2s. A safe setup would be 225/35/19 and 255/30/19 on lowered or standard suspension.

I've thought about spacers and as far as I can tell, 10mm should be fine with the stock wheels/tires. But if you throw wider tires at it, not so sure anymore.

I'd buy the tires first, then see if a spacer is still doable.

Thx Nick! Great website btw, already love a few items there (steering wheel, AFE filters, scoops, perhaps the roof spoiler, etc.) May be contacting you soon for a bulk order

I called TireRack. According to them:

1. On the stock rims, you can go as wide as 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 (basically just 10mm increase on the patch)
2. On non-stock 18s, you can go 245/40/18 front and 265/35/18 in rear (I guess that would be a 8"/8.5" front rim and 9"/9.5" rear rim)
3. On non-stock 19s, you can go 245/35/19 front and 265/30/19 in rear

The salesman didn't offer spacers (directed me to H&R website), but I have bought from them before (Luke is one of their guys that would be willing to sell you a setup).

If I get 10mm spacers, can I stay with the stock lug bolts or do I have to buy the longer ones?

Also, anyone know which BMW rims would fit the 135i (E92 rims perhaps)?

Longer lugs are required when using spacers. The Macht Schnell kits include longer lugs with the kits - so the guesswork is eliminated.

Thx Tom, great info! I actually have bought from you before several items for my E39 M5, an iPod interface and a Tech cupholder come to mind! (I'm prolific on the M5 board where you've been a sponsor). Your spacers look like a piece of art, honestly prior to my MTM spacers made specifically for the RS4, I never found any that would match their craftsmanship, but these are stunning!

What would you recommend for front and rear (10 all around, or perhaps 10 front 12 rear)? I may upgrade to a wider tire and perhaps rim along the way (running on 275s all around in both my E39 and RS4 has gotten me so used to a wide tire, that the 215 up front makes me think it's a spare donut! LOL)

It's a small world!

We really didn't get a chance to measure since our project got the VMR treatment right away:

Here's the car in stock form:

The 135 is pretty limited on room for expansion, but it looks like a 12mm/10mm will fit. If you can perform a quick measurement of the outermost tire to the inner fender, this will give you your needed measurements. Here's an illustration to show what I am referring to:

Don't worry about the lugs - those are covered in the kits.

Excellent pic, I will take the measurements as prescribed and get back to you. I recon I might go with the 10s to be on the safe side should I decide to beef up the contact patch of the tires going forward, but will measure anyhow for people to know.

I did a measurement, but without more scientific tools beyond my high school ruler , it is a tough call. I certainly think 10mm spacers will fit (and look just right), 12mm will likely be fine also, but not sure if the extra 2mm are worth the risk of rubbing. The front seems like it can take 12mm easily, there is a bit more room relative to the rear (especially since if you have passengers in the back the rear will drop noticeably and may cause rubbing). So a staggered setup (12mm front/10mm rear) can be applied, although if you don't want to tinker with the stock (relative) ratios, the same spacer all around is probably best.

Slightly off topic: what do you gain with spacers? With a 10mm spacer, would it be equivalent to having a wheel that has 10mm less offset? Are there any downsides to this?

Correct, and adding track width at the same time.

There are no downsides to spacers, I can't see more than a 10mm being used on stock wheels.

10mm rear/12mm front spacers are perfectly fine and look outstanding:

Lowered on KWs, no spacers were needed with the Vb3s. Full journal thread on our project 1 cna be seen here:

I have been running 10mm spacers behind my stock front wheels for about 5000 miles.
20mm wider track equals less understeer. No rooster tails. No rubbing. I will run 245/35/18's all the way around when new tires are needed. I bought extra rear rims just for this purpose. It should look stock, just fatter. I hope...
