Performance upgrades
New guy here...
My new-to-me 2012 128i with 61,000 miles now has the Stage 3 intake, BMW Euro Air Box with K&N filter, a BMW PE, and a BPC tune. It's also got the Steptronic transmission. For my next step, I had hoped to go with AA or Supersprint catless headers and another BPC tune, leaving my secondary cats and resonator in place. I'm reading that this may result in a loud and stinky beast. Not sure I should press on or stay where I am. BPC dyno'd another car with the same equipment I presently have at 217. I was hoping to get up to around 240whp. Anyone care to sway me one way or the other? TIA Last edited by varoadking; 01-10-2018 at 12:06 AM.. |

3 stage intake made a bigger difference in power for me day to day. The AA headers felt really strong on mountain runs where the car remained above 4k. Yes, it will be super loud. For me, interior trim that didn't make noise before started to rattle from the drone of headers + PE exhaust. I eventually put on a 135i exhaust to quiet it back down which removed almost all the drone and actually made it a little less stinky at stoplights.

Thanks for the first-hand feedback, Suhb...
I wonder if the catted aFe headers would be a better approach given where I am already with the car. I'm really not into loud and stinky at this point in my life... Anyone here have good luck with the aFe's from a power gain standpoint? Last edited by varoadking; 12-12-2017 at 08:45 AM.. |

Basically a way to add some valve lift. BPC has a tune for it now.

Thanks for the heads-up on the MILVS upgrade fellas...I'm taking my 128i to BPC for this and the new tune and dyno runs on January 4th...

Interesting development. But from reading that thread, it sounds like the MILVs is only adding about 8whp versus the standard BPC header tune - is that right? Not really worth the trouble, IMO.
Would have been great to do when I had the valve cover off a few months ago to replace the eccentric shaft sensor, but I'm not sure I want to tear down like that again so soon...

As far as I know, I’m the only one that has them WITH headers - and it pulls very hard, torque is everywhere. |

Definitely interested, but like I said, I'm not too eager to pull the valve cover again right away. PLus I wonder if there will be any more development with different sizes, etc. Curious though, I know BPC sells the tune, but who sells the shims? It looks like CobraMarty was R&Ring them, but I didn't see a price or for sale link anywhere...

My first BPC header tune made 245whp and 215wtq (with a few gallons of E85) I still think the car would have made better numbers with pure gasoline (plus, I wouldn’t have run into the issues I did later on) Every subsiquebt revision in the tune made less power -237whp? And 212wtq was one of my final dynos. I went back to my original tune, and had Bob send me the newest version of the Shim tune. It absolutely 100% 💯 feels more powerful at every RPM point - I would guess over 230wtq easily and over 250whp - but we won’t know until I hit the dyno again. |

So my 128i with the BMW Euro airbox with K&N filter, 3 stage manifold, stock downtubes and cats with PE, and BPC tune was dyno'd at BPC today at +/- 217whp & 205wtq.
Not exactly awe inspiring, to say the least... We'll see where we are once the MILVS (and new eccentric shaft sensor) are installed, and Bob works his magic with another new tune... |

It's got 62,000 miles, and I have put 9,000 on it in the past 8 months. I want to get 5 more years of mostly trouble-free use out of this car if I can. I've done my part...and then some so far... |
