Bump Stop Question

Are there any concerns with a taller rear bump stop then original? Safety, ride, performance?

2009 128i with sport package.

I had new shocks and struts installed and used a shock mount kit from a online supplier. The kit said "for standard suspension" and listed no other option and listed that part for the 135 as well. I called the company and they reassured me that it was the correct part.

After installing one, it was noticed that the new ones were taller than the originals, but it was decided to go ahead and put the other on as well.

Thanks

Depending on your springs, shocks and ride height you might hit the bumpstops too early which will not be good. The fact you have a sport suspension means your car sits a little lower than non-sport. I wouldn't be surprised if you aren't riding the bumpstops more than ideal. Whether this happens or not is also a bit dependent on the quality of the roads around you and how aggressively you drive.

Good news is the rear is relatively easy to change.

How much taller are we talking here? And how many miles does your car/suspension have?

The original bump stops may have been compressed over time.

Thank you for the replies

I will need to take the wheel off later this week to get an accurate measurement. My guess would have been 10 mm, but that's just eyeballing it. Do seem to have compressed more as I have driven it.

I do see different part numbers on Real OEM for the 128 and 135 bump stops, but they were listed as the same where I purchased the kit. My understanding is the 128 sport package suspension is the same as the 135 (?)

The car has 76,000. I do spirited driving and occasional autocross. And was planning a track day later this year.

I was able to measure and they are 10mm different. Looks like I will need to find correct part and replace.

How does the car ride and handle ? If you're not noticing any problems them leave it alone . Don't overthink things.

I agree with Fast1eddy.

The durometer also might be a little softer than stock and will compress to the same point as the shorter stiffer bump stop.

If you must, you can cut them to make them shorter if you want.

Agreed with this, I've seen it on my other cars over the years when replacing suspensions, new bump stops (OEM parts) are a little taller than the old ones that come off the car. After getting compressed a bazillion times they just stop spring back completely.

Also agreed w/ all the other comments as well but I think this is the reason for what you see.
