It makes perfect sense, as the old ///M Coupe (Z4M) is no longer in production and instead a Z5 3.5is.
The new ///M Coupe and hopefully ///M Roadster will be based off the current 1 series.
Expect more hp, more torque, more muscular styling, an ///M limited slip diff, ///M Suspension, and bigger brakes. Oh wait, all of that has been discovered to be on these test mules.

Better than the Ferrari F40? Technically, that had only 2.9L but made 478hp in street trim from its twin-turbo V-8 with true dry sump (Le Mans versions made much more power). Porsche has made some wicked 3.0L Turbo motors too (road and track versions).

Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa lump just so happens to be a 3.0l, as was the original 300 SL motor. I'd think we could come up with a rather sizable list of more interesting three liters than the N5x.
