If you, for some reason, had to garage your car for a year or more what precautions would you take? I'm looking for useful mechanical advice ... not "lock all my guns up so that I didn't kill myself" Thank you.

Sta-bil in a fresh tank of Gas, tires to Max pressure, battery Tender to do a trickle Charge, fresh oil, Moth balls, mouse traps......and see if you could get someone to drive it every few weeks to totally warm it up...otherwise, you may want to raise the tires off the ground. :ast thing you want to do is just let it idle every now and then with out actually doing a nice drive to burn out the moisture.
However, if you have to store it that long, why not sell it, invest the cash, and buy a new one when you get back? |

I had to put my car in storage several times while I was in the military. If you are in the Navy, do not pay a company for "long term storage", many of my friends came back to cars that would not start, and rotors corroded very badly, or cars that were broken into.
If you can afford to put it in a storage unit, do it. You might be able to cover the cost of this by dropping the plates/registration and reducing your insurance. The most important thing, clean the inside of your car!!! Any food particles or anything else that is organic and can decompose will draw critters, or at the very least make your car smell. Buy some roll up ramps from auto zone for $20 and keep your tires from deteriorating. Change your oil. Fill the gas tank up fully. Disconnect the battery. Wash and detail the car if indoors, heavily wax if you are keeping it outside. I'll think of more as it comes. If you have someone to drive it around the block 2x a month, you'd be in good shape. |

I'll be deploying in December. I've decided that I'll just sell my car a month before this happens.
I'll upgrade to something around $55-60k when I get back in 2011. I plan on making use of my military discount once again. What's good in 2011? |
